The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra begins its 2014-15 season Sept. 13 with a new associate conductor, many outstanding guest artists, and collaborations slated with many of the area's leading cultural and educational institutions.
A recording project for Naxos will shed light on the works of the little-known French composer Florent Schmitt, and the orchestra will continue its search for a new pops conductor and concertmaster.

The Seattle Seahawks' 20-point victory over the Green Bay Packers in last night's "NFL Kickoff" on NBC was watched by 26.9 million viewers - up 7 percent from last year's opening-game, and ranking as the third-most watched "NFL Kickoff" game in the 13-year history of the event, according to fast national data released today by The Nielsen Company.

The Niagara County Peach Festival is now underway at Academy Park.
Festival organizers from the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston are once again hard at work to raise money to benefit numerous Kiwanis programs for the Niagara and Western New York community. While this festival is its biggest event, it is by no means the only activity Kiwanis is involved in.

The following incidents occurred from Aug. 18 to 24, as reported by the Grand Island Fire Co. A total of 24 calls were answered by the department during this period. The GIFC has now responded to 973 calls so far this year. This compares to the 933 calls received at the same point in 2013.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the rollout of "K-Solar," a landmark program under the $1 billion "NY-Sun" initiative, to help public school districts throughout New York lower their energy costs with clean, local power. The program will provide schools with the tools, technical expertise and access to financing to make solar a realistic and affordable option for K-12 schools.
To date, a total of 40 school districts have registered to participate in the program, representing nearly 200 schools in communities across the state.
