The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program to support Western New York-area high school seniors aspiring to careers in the food service and hospitality industries. This year's program will award four recipients with a $1,000 scholarship to be applied toward room and board, books or fees.

Niagara University has received a $300,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to continue and enhance work done by its College of Nursing to foster nurse resilience, effectively bridge the transition from student to health care professional, address a critical shortage in the nursing workforce, increase awareness of health inequities, and develop effective approaches to care in complex environments across Western New York, with an emphasis on Niagara County.

Renowned speaker, author and trainer Duncan Kirkwood will serve as the founding director of the Center for Resiliency, which was created to help students and other young people develop the skills that are critical to overcoming obstacles and achieving their goals.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 33-year-old David J. Whitman, formerly of Niagara Falls, was sentenced this morning before Erie County Court Judge James Bargnesi to a three-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 33-year-old Deyanna J. Davis of Buffalo pleaded guilty this afternoon before Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case to one count of assault in the second degree (class "D" felony). The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge on the day jury selection was scheduled to begin in her trial.

The Niagara Falls Police Department is searching for 15-year-old Lorelai R. Russell, who was reported missing on Tuesday. Lorelai was last seen wearing a gray hoodie with anime characters, and sweatpants. She is 5 feet, 2 inches tall; approximately 80 pounds; and possibly traveling out of state and considered vulnerable.

New York state has one of the nation's highest debt levels, largely because measures to restrict the excessive use of debt have been circumvented over the years in state budgets. Since the Debt Reform Act was passed in 2000, state-supported debt outstanding increased by $25 billion. Over the next five years, this debt is projected by the Division of the Budget to increase by $26 billion, or 42%, from $61.9 billion in state fiscal year (SFY) 2021-22 to $88 billion in SFY 2026-27.
