The Youngstown Garden Club is having a "Paint a Pretty Flower Pot" party at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown. All are welcome to attend and enjoy wine and cheese - and take home a houseplant!

Basil Seggos, chairman of New York's plastic bag task force and commissioner of the State Department of Environmental Conservation, has issued the task force's comprehensive report outlining eight potential solutions to address the "scourge" of plastic bag waste in the state. The report was sent to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature for consideration.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara Inc. is announcing an expansion of its initiative to increase adult literacy services in Niagara County. Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced Wednesday that 23-year-old Sammy Abdellatif of Grand Island has been sentenced by Erie County Court Judge Kenneth F. Case to eight years in prison and four years post-release supervision for an attack on an Erie County sheriff's deputy.

This past summer, former Town of Wheatfield Supervisor Bob Cliffe announced he wouldn't be running for re-election. This decision opened up a seat as the town's supervisor. In any type of sport, when you play the best, mistakes just can't happen. For 30 minutes, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons played mostly good, mistake-free hockey. But, it was the final 15 minutes the doomed them in the end.
The Falcons took a tough loss to the hands of the reigning New York state champs, Williamsville North, 3-2, at the Northtown Center.
