Over past weeks, the Village of Youngstown has certainly seen its share of it, with recent news of the Melloni's Market Place closing - coming on the heels of the village's KeyBank branch consolidation. Now, comes word of another change on the horizon in the village - but a refreshing one. How about a new summertime happening the River Region can really forward to?

This year's Island Dispatch/Grand Island PennySaver Easter Coloring Contest drew 131 entries. Winners in the three age groups were presented their awards last Saturday at Tops Market of Grand Island, one of the sponsors of the contest along with Kelly's Country Store, John's Pizza & Subs, and Phil Mastantuono Allstate Agency.

This coming Sunday, April 8, will be the 40th anniversary of the ordination to the priesthood of the Rev. Judith Burrows. She was ordained a priest at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church on April 8, 1978, thus becoming the first woman ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York.

Erie County Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw recently updated school districts throughout Erie County on their share of collected sales tax from the first quarter of the year. Checks that support programs and services for children, teachers and administrators have been delivered to Erie County to school superintendents. Grand Island School District's share totals $837,310.65.

In October, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced North Tonawanda was a recipient of $2.5 million as part of the $20 million Smart Growth Community Fund Buffalo Billion II initiative. North Tonawanda, as well as the other municipalities that received $2.5 million, such as the City of Dunkirk, City of Lackawanna and Village of Gowanda, are focusing on projects that utilize existing infrastructure to support placemaking, walkable communities and sustainable development. Funding awards were recommended and approved by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council.

The Buffalo Bills and Unyts have teamed up to host a community blood drive on Wednesday, April 11, in the ADPRO Sports Training Center at New Era Field in Orchard Park. The event will give presenting donors an opportunity to give "the gift of life," while getting a behind-the-scenes look at the Bills practice facility and a chance to meet Bills alumni and Billy Buffalo.
