White geese mingling with Canadians

Last spring, I wrote a story in the Sentinel about the Canadian geese invading our area, coming from the south. Also mentioned was about how loads of these migrating birds have taken up permanent residence in some northern climes and there seems to be more and more each year.

The 2013 season came to a close last Saturday night with the annual King of the Hill events sponsored by Investor's Services. Twin $1,000 to win 100-lap mains for the Investor's Services Sportsman and Ki-Po Chevrolet Street Stocks highlighted the weekend. A total of 150 cars participated in the two-day affair.
Lew-Port's Dreher named New York State Teacher of the Year

The New York State Board of Regents announced Sept. 17 that Ashli Skura Dreher, a high school special education teacher at the Lewiston-Porter Central School District who lives on Grand Island, has been named the 2014 New York State Teacher of the Year.

Clerk's 'Thank-A-Vet' Discount Card Program signs-on 500th business

When Chris Jacobs took office as Erie County Clerk last year, he inherited a veterans program in name only. The discount program had but 27 participating businesses and very few veterans were issued the complimentary card.

"I pledged to make this program a real benefit to the over 60,000 veterans in Erie County and vowed to have 250 businesses signed-on by the end of my first term in office," Jacobs said. He has doubled his goal, recently hitting the 500th mark of participating Erie County businesses offering discounts to enrolled veterans.

Veronica Connor Middle School student revived by GI school official

Veronica Conner Middle School Assistant Principal Eleanor Payne stepped in Monday, Sept. 9, to do CPR on a 10-year-old student who had collapsed in the school hallway.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the Grand Island Fire Co. responded to a report of a "student down" at the Ransom Road school.

According to the GIFC report, the student had left the school earlier in the day with an unspecified illness, but had returned with her mother to pick up some items when she collapsed near her locker.

Volunteers sought for Sanborn Autumn Fest

The Sanborn Business & Professional Association is looking for volunteers to assist in selling pumpkins during the Sanborn Autumn Fest, Oct. 5-6 at the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum (Route 31 in Sanborn). From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, the SBPA will sell pumpkins as part of a fundraiser for the association, but need assistance in manpower.
