The 100 Club of Buffalo Inc. has awarded 20 scholarships totaling $14,000 to area students through its Scholarship of Excellence program. Scholarships ranging from $250 to $2,000 were presented to high school seniors and college students who are children of active first responders, including law enforcement, fire and/or emergency medical personnel, or are active first responders themselves.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has announced his office filed a lawsuit against Western Sky Financial LLC, CashCall Inc., WS Funding LLC, and their owners, Martin Webb and J. Paul Reddam, for violations of New York's usury and licensed lender laws in connection with their issuing of personal loans over the Internet. The companies charged annual rates of interest from 89 percent to more than 355 percent to thousands of New York consumers. These interest rates far exceed the maximum rate allowed under New York law, which is limited to 16 percent for most lenders not licensed by the state.

The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Derby - the derby formally known as the "Fall Classic" - will be holding its 37th annual contest Aug. 17-25. In what started out as the Niagara County Fishing Derby, this competition is now open to three counties (Niagara, Erie and Orleans) in an attempt to encourage more involvement in this family-oriented event (with a big focus on the Junior Division).
