Ginny Fagard is 15 years old and battling for her life. The North Tonawanda girl was struck with leukemia at the age of 4 years old. The toll of chemo and radiation wreaked havoc on her young and fragile body, but she did beat the dreaded disease.

New York State Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced nearly $40 million will be awarded to 75 municipalities through Round 4 of the Restore New York Communities Initiative. That includes a $500,000 grant for North Tonawanda's Downtown Gateway Project, including the redevelopment of two properties in the city.

YMCA Buffalo Niagara officially kicks off of its 2017 annual campaign on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Funds raised from the Y's annual campaign give children and families in need an opportunity to take part in programs they would otherwise be unable to afford. For example, they provide parents with child care, youth with a place to learn new skills, and seniors a place to take charge of their health and well-being.

In front of a loud crowd inside the "Lion's Den" at Lockport High School, the Lions defeated the first-place North Tonawanda Lumberjacks 61-51. With the win, Lockport sweeps the season series with North Tonawanda. The Lions are the only Niagara Frontier League team to beat NT twice.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced two new initiatives to encourage the proper management and disposal of products potentially harmful to public health and the environment. The pharmaceutical take-back program is a $1 million pilot program promoting the proper disposal of unwanted or unused prescription medicines that covers the costs of consumer drug collection boxes and disposal for two years.

Following a press conference in Albany on Tuesday, GOP Assemblyman Raymond Walter (Amherst) and GOP Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (Ballston) have introduced legislation that would allow Transportation Network Companies (TNC) such as Uber and Lyft to provide ridesharing services statewide. Currently, these companies are only allowed to legally operate in New York City.

New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, R-C-I-North Tonawanda, reintroduced legislation early last month that would cut outdated, burdensome state regulations to help spur economic growth. Ortt's Red Tape Reduction Act (S1753) coincides with President Donald Trump's recent executive order to cut back on federal regulations as a way to boost the economy.
