First Niagara helps Habitat for Humanity change lives with homes

The First Niagara Foundation and Habitat for Humanity will work together to build a new home at 118 Fox St., Buffalo. Employees of the bank will work at the house this month to help a local single mom and her children make their dream of home ownership a reality.

Habitat for Humanity ensures everyone has a decent place to live by providing affordable housing to families that might not otherwise be able to own a home. The houses are sold to pre-qualified families at no profit and with no interest charged while Habitat holds the mortgage.

The home on Fox Street is expected to be complete in late 2014. The First Niagara Foundation is providing $15,000 in funding for Habitat for Humanity to complete the project.

Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont, announced the company has entered into an agreement with Budwey's Market and, upon closing, will assume operation of the grocery store located at 2555 N. Main St., Newfane.

There are approximately 74 total employees at the Newfane location; each of whom has the option of applying for continued employment with Tops Markets.

"Budwey's has been an important part of the Newfane community for many years, and we plan to continue the tradition of providing shoppers with an outstanding shopping experience," said Frank Curci, Tops Markets president and CEO.

Village of Lewiston: Machelor to lead Planning Board

Village of Lewiston Mayor Terry Collesano has appointed a new chairman for the municipality's Historic Preservation Commission/Planning Board, and taken steps to replace two departed members.

At Monday's reorganizational meeting, Collesano selected Norm Machelor to replace Ken Slaugenhoupt, who opted not to continue on the board.

Machelor was appointed to the Planning Board in 2013. Prior to that, he served 12 years on Grand Island's Planning Board.

"I like the way he is with people that come in looking to build, or for expanding or whatever," Collesano said. "He's got a level head."
