Erie County DA's office observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn reminds residents his office is a resource for victims of domestic violence - and will continue to prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law. Flynn encouraged anyone who has been a victim of domestic violence, as well as those who may be at risk of abuse, to inquire about services available through the BE SAFE domestic violence victim advocacy program.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Oct. 2, Niagara Falls Police Department responded to 1509 18th St., for a report of a man shot. Upon arrival, officers located a 58-year-old male resident of Niagara Falls suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kathy Hochul recently proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and announced $6.5 million in funding that will allow state-licensed service providers to offer survivors of domestic violence and their families with options for assistance and support, instead of relying on shelter-based services, and that will also enhance prevention programs.

Erie County Home Energy Assistance Program opens Monday

The Erie County Department of Social Services announced applications for Home Energy Assistance Program regular benefits will be accepted beginning Friday, Oct. 1, approximately one month earlier than usual. This year, in light of continuing coronavirus-related concerns related to public gatherings, ECDSS is strongly encouraging applicants to apply online or to utilize other remote channels to apply. As in previous years, interested applicants are encouraged to apply sooner rather than later.
