Retail and restaurant businesses have traditionally celebrated this day with promotions and sales, but there is also an opportunity for service-based businesses to be a part of the day!

Dreary weather on Sunday might've put a fright in the hearts of Lewiston merchants, but it actually served as an ideal backdrop for the annual "Trick or Treat on Center Street." With the roadway closed, more children came out to collect candy and show off their stellar Halloween costumes.

On Oct. 13, eighth graders from Veronica Connor Middle School could be seen walking down the multipurpose trail on the West River. They were carrying garbage bags and collecting litter from the trail, as well as from the area between the trail and the river.

The Town of Lewiston on Monday voted to provide the Village of Lewiston with $190,000 in Niagara River Greenway funds for a pavilion at Academy Park.

The Wicked Lewsers, a KISS cover band, has provided entertainment for Islanders for the past 10 years, at both the summer series in the Town Hall Gazebo and the Independence Day parade. They will next be seen at 8 p.m. Oct. 28, at the Matt Urban VFW Post, 3741 Walden Ave., Lancaster.

Each year, Halloween is traditionally celebrated with trick-or-treating and parties - and candy and drinks. Unfortunately, the night often includes drunk drivers on the streets and distracted drivers as well. The Lewiston Police Department will have extra patrols on policing our ghouls and goblins. Members of the public who planned to speak their minds against mega warehouses and for zoning revisions were thrown for a loop at the start of the Oct. 16 Town Board meeting. A vote on proposed zoning revisions was destined to be tabled, not voted upon as expected.

With an influx of refugees into Western New York and the economic challenges faced by many families, Colvin Cleaners has seen a much-earlier increase in calls for coats this year as it prepares for its annual "Coats 4 Kids" "Live Drives" to collect much-needed, gently used, or new winter coats, jackets, gloves, hats and scarves for toddlers to young adults and families in need this winter season.

The Island Hair Studio and Barbershop is hosting a food drive from now until Nov. 17. This food drive is accepting nonperishable items. All donations can be dropped off inside the salon, and the proceeds will be given to the local Neighbor's Foundation of Grand Island.

The Oxy Aquatic Center at Niagara University was abuzz with excited swimmers and families this past Friday, Oct. 13, for the season opener dual swim meet against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. The Bonnies are a long-time "Little Three" rival of the Purple Eagles.

Council members rescinded the third part of the Lewiston Council on the Arts' proposal - opting to not present this component for Niagara River Greenway funding - based on recent actions taken by village trustees.
