Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced registration is open for the 10th annual I Love My Park Day, which will be held the weekend of May 1-2 at state parks, historic sites and public lands across New York.
North Tonawanda HUB continues to serve

In an effort to assist qualified families who are in need of services in Niagara County, the North Tonawanda HUB hosted a drive-thru event March 10 at the South Elementary School and High School in North Tonawanda. One hundred fifty families received a bag of resources available to them for utilization during this pandemic.
DEC public comment period for proposed Town of Niagara asphalt plant

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a public comment period regarding an air quality permit filed on behalf of a proposed asphalt plant for 4660 Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara. Written comments may be sent to Kerri L. Pickard-DePriest at DEC Region 9 Headquarters, 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo, NY 14203. The deadline for comment recently was extended to May 3.
Canal Fest canceled again this year

Canal Fest of the Tonawandas 2021 has been officially canceled, North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas announced Tuesday. The event was scheduled for July 18-25.

Lange expressed her excitement to share with her daughter, who is a registered nurse, the news of her vaccination.

Carnegie Art Center has 'The Flow Through Wanakena Exhibition'

The Carnegie Art Center is hosting "The Flow Through Wanakena Exhibition" through Jan. 30 in the Rotunda Gallery space. This exhibition features photography by Michael Mandolfo. All are welcome to view the exhibition during their gallery hours of 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. There is no charge to attend the exhibition.

Though Erie County has made statewide headlines over the past month for its high number of coronavirus cases, more attention is starting to shift to neighboring Niagara County - where 11.5% of people tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday were positive. The seven-day average at that point was 8.6%, which was second in New York (only trailing Allegany County's 9.1%).
NCCC unveils new EOP office, collaboration with Niagara Falls High School

While the educational opportunity program (EOP) has been around since former New York State Assemblyman Arthur O. Eve started it in 1967, it is relatively new to Niagara County Community College. The program started at NCCC in August of 2016 with the goal of providing academic workshops, tutoring, counseling, advisement and financial assistance to historically under-served students who require additional academic support.
Niagara County DOH to offer drive-thru rabies clinic in NT

Local officials hand out free meals to Wheatfield seniors

Last Friday, officials from Niagara County and the Town of Wheatfield were on hand at the Wheatfield Senior Center to hand out over 100 Thanksgiving dinners to local seniors. The event was part of Niagara County Legislator Jesse Gooch's "Meals With Heart From Six Feet Apart" program that he created in March to offer affordable meals to seniors in the community amid the ongoing pandemic.

The Niagara Active Hose Volunteer Fire Department converted its banquet facility into a virtual learning center for the children of active and social members to attend classes virtually, yet still in a routine, group setting. The fire chief and families felt it imperative that widespread contact be limited so that, in case of infection within the schools, there would be no increased risk of endangering the community or jeopardizing the firemen's ability to respond to calls.

Local officials call on residents to demand state protect theater industry

Earlier this week, New York state's movie theater industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced theaters across the state (except for NYC) could finally begin to reopen. Per state safety guidelines, theaters can only maintain a 25% capacity; with no more than 50 people in front of each movie screen.
