Over past weeks, residents and visitors in our neck of the woods have certainly had the opportunity to experience and be part of a multitude of holiday delights. That included the "Noel of Niagara" light display that continues throughout the season at the Town of Niagara's Veterans Park on Lockport Road; holiday shopping offerings such as Small Business Saturday in Lewiston and Sanborn, "Jingle Falls USA" in Niagara Falls; last weekend's Ransomville Festival of Lights; and Friday evening's Holiday Light Up Parade in Newfane.

Those venturing throughout the River Region in search of Small Business Saturday bargains are best advised to include the hamlet of Ransomville in their travels next weekend, as well. This little community on the east end of the Town of Porter will present its annual Festival of Wreaths celebration and a whole host of holiday events on Saturday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 1.

The Greater Niagara Ballet Company will host its annual trivia night fundraiser at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, inside the American Legion VFW Post at 8643 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls. Join in for a night of fun, with pizza, chips, a cash bar, a basket raffle, a pie auction, "catch the joker" and a 50/50 raffle.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Erik Kulleseid today showcased 20 shoreline resiliency projects in Niagara and Orleans counties that are receiving an estimated $49 million in state funding through Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI). The projects were reviewed at a meeting of the Niagara and Orleans REDI Region Planning Committee, which includes local elected officials and other stakeholders.

Shown in a storefront window across the street from the post office in Ransomville is a tribute to former 1st District Niagara County Legislator Clyde Burmaster, who lost his lengthy battle to cancer earlier this fall. It was prepared by Ransomville resident Ruth Anne Buzzard, who wrote, "The Hamlet of Ransomville gives a Hometown Tribute to their friend, and Niagara County Legislator Clyde Burmaster.

Though Casey LaFlair is from Pittsburgh and has no family ties to this area, she volunteered at the first "Rockout Cancer" event in 2018. LaFlair worked alongside the Lower Niagara Community Survivors group in raising funds for others - for people she didn't know and had never met, who were battling the disease and in need of assistance.

A special celebration took place Sunday afternoon on the Village of Lewiston waterfront. The Freedom Crossing Monument's 10th anniversary was celebrated with speeches, historical reenactments, choral performances, a documentary screening and reception.

With The Silo and Water Street Landing closed for winter, and other eateries looking to scale back as the days grow shorter and the temperature decreases, the Lewiston Event Center is expanding its culinary offerings. The family-fun center recently began serving lunch.

High water levels wreaked havoc with the Niagara County boating season, and led some to skip out on visiting the villages of Lewiston and Wilson this summer. Not wanting a repeat of this in 2020 - and seeking to reinforce the idea local stores are open for business - Village of Wilson Mayor Arthur Lawson and Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch held a "Lake Ontario 2020 Preparedness Meeting" Thursday at the Red Brick Municipal Building.

The Griffon House owners on Thursday officially declared they are coming to Youngstown and plan to move into the old grocery store that left the village with an empty storefront in 2018. The only questions remaining is how much will be invested and when.

Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch's artist group met Wednesday morning and discussed adding a mural and perhaps 3-D art to the Lewiston Event Center's exterior. She said she broached the idea to owners Emery Simon and Harold Hibbard, and they were receptive. Hibbard was in attendance at the meeting.

The Lower Niagara Community Survivors group held its second annual "Rockout Cancer" event Sunday at the Lewiston Stone House. People came out to support the organization that is now offering financial and manpower services to those battling the disease.

Village of Lewiston Deputy Mayor Vic Eydt joined with Ashley Olds, Bill Kilmer and Linda Fleck in presenting the municipality with $10,201 on Monday for the new inclusive playground project. The funds were generated at last month's "Moose's Mission" fundraiser, which was presented by Lower Niagara Moose Lodge No. 584 and Women of the Moose Chapter 1940.

In what could only be described as a sight straight out of a Food Network kitchen, The Stone House was filled with delicious desserts of every shape, size, texture and taste on Thursday night. The occasion was a ribbon-cutting for Just Desserts by Aimee - which is kitty-corner to the Lewiston wine bar. Friends and family looked on with awe at the picturesque pastries, precisely piled on serving plates.

Lewiston is the summer events capital of the county. People come from around the state - sometimes farther - to explore an array of festivals, attend a concert or two, enjoy the waterfront and pay homage to history at a handful of monuments. From the first sign of spring through the last semblance of summer, Center Street is bustling and restaurants are overflowing. And yet, as Lewiston continues to make headlines for its many offerings, an important piece of village culture is being overlooked: the artistic community.

But as they receive their diplomas and special honors, one class member will not be there. He'll already be embarking on the next chapter in his life - that of service to country.

The 14th annual Lewiston GardenFest, presented by the Lewiston Garden Club, is set for Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days along Center Street. It includes more than 80 vendors selling flowers, plants and garden essentials, along with speakers, demonstrations, a free garden walk and a container garden contest throughout the weekend.
