The Niagara County Community College Alumni Association will host its 20th annual 5K run/walk on Friday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The course is USA Track and Field certified and features a fast, flat route around the scenic NCCC campus in Sanborn. The event is open to the public, alumni, faculty, staff and students.

The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. has a 90-year history of caring for and supporting residents of the Niagara County community. This Saturday, from 2-4 p.m. at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road, HANCI will celebrate a book launch and release for its "Faces of Niagara." The publication, being released to the community for the first time on Saturday, celebrates the lives of almost 70 Niagara County residents aged 90 and older.

Niagara County Community College Interim President William J. Murabito announced Tuesday that Stephen Eden, New York State Sen. Robert Ortt and JoAnn Pellegrino will deliver the keynote addresses at the college's 54th annual commencement ceremonies. As a change from the past few years, there will be three ceremonies taking place on the Sanborn campus at 9 and 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the Arts and Media Theatre.

On Monday night, the Town of Wheatfield Town Board met for their last regular meeting of April. During the meeting, the board scheduled two public hearings and Wheatfield Supervisor Don MacSwan discussed the possibility of switching to LED lighting throughout the town.

Niagara Catholic High School marked 90 years on Monday with a Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone. The 66th Street School was formed out of a 1975 union between Duffy and St. Mary's/Madonna high schools.

The Hon. Gary Strenkoski, Wheatfield town justice, swore in the Wheatfield Business Association's 2018 officers and board members at the group's monthly meeting at Yubb's Restaurant. Sworn in were Rob Allen as president, Jim Candella as vice president, Gilles Dube as treasurer and Danny Maerten as secretary.

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced the new addition to the sheriff's office canine team has been named in honor of Chief Craig C. Harmon, who was the chief of the Niagara County Drug Task Force when he passed away in 2004. The new canine, Chief, is currently in training with handler Deputy Richard Bull. He was purchased through many generous donations and funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Monday night at the Wheatfield Town Hall, the Town Board held one of its quickest meetings of the year. Regardless of the length of the meeting, several items were taken care of, some of which have been ongoing within the town.

Tuesday afternoon, the Niagara County Host Community Standing Committee, which administers and oversees projects funded by Niagara River Greenway funding, held a brief meeting to hear several proposals. Two of the proposals came from Town of Niagara Supervisor Lee Wallace, who is also a vice chairperson to the group.

On Sunday afternoon, the Town of Wheatfield held a luncheon at the town's Community Center to swear in David Heim as the new town justice. The town also recognized Matthew Mosher who was sworn in last Tuesday and replaced Heim as the town prosecutor.

On March 20, 1918, a group of Wheatfield residents met and formed the First Volunteer Chemical Fire Co. of Bergholz. 100 years later, first Chief Julius Stoelting and first President Henry Voelker's volunteer company is still running strong along Niagara Road.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons hockey team has been through it all this season.
Coming off the previous season where they didn't make the sectional final; a middle of the season where they weren't playing their best hockey; a historic end of the season run; and the tragic loss of a classmate mixed into four months was just tidbits of what the Falcons went through.
After the tragedy in the community, the team uplifted many Wheatfield spirits with a run to the New York state large schools championship. Unfortunately, good things come to an end, and on Sunday evening, the Falcons were defeated by the No. 1 team in New York state, the Victor Blue Devils, 5-1.

On Wednesday, students, faculty, friends and family received tragic news that Michael Ziegler; a student at Niagara-Wheatfield High School and a member of the Falcons football, wrestling and lacrosse teams, tragically passed away.
