Students injured after Wheatfield accident

Thu, May 11th 2017 11:30 am
Five students were injured Wednesday, after a driver sideswiped a school bus in Wheatfield, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office reported.

The bus, which carried students from the North Tonawanda School District, was en route back to the North Tonawanda High School from Orleans/Niagara BOCES.

The injured students were taken to DeGraff Memorial Hospital for treatment. The bus driver and the other 20 students on board were uninjured.

When patrol arrived at the scene of the accident, they found the bus on the west shoulder, and the other vehicle in a driveway on Nash Road.

After investigating the scene, patrol said Donald McGuire Jr., 36, of Ransomville, was driving northbound and drifted into the southbound lane, sideswiping the school bus. McGuire's vehicle then struck a Verizon pole and stopped in a nearby driveway and against a fence.

He was transported by ambulance to Mount St Mary's Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

McGuire was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and several vehicle and traffic violations, with other charges pending, according to the NCSO. He is due in the Town of Wheatfield court on June 14.
