Following months of planning and discussion, the Town of Lewiston moved on establishing a single town water district at its Monday meeting. It also set the stage for a $10.2 million water line improvement covering numerous areas of Lewiston.

The Brickyard Pub & B.B.Q. is hosting Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara's annual "Celebrity Bartending" event - this year dubbed "Battle of the Businesses" - from 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. The event will benefit the more than 600 individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities whom the agency supports.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston has announced it will hold an amusement ride preview night from 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Academy Park in Lewiston. The event will lead off this year's Niagara County Peach Festival.

Lewiston Council on the Arts Artistic Director Eva Nicklas recently met with 2nd District Niagara County Legislator Rebecca Wydysh to express thanks for the legislature's support. Nicklas also was there to share information about the "greening" of Lewiston during the 51st annual Lewiston Art Festival, set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12-13.

New York State Sen. Rob Ortt on Thursday delivered a combined $65,000 to law enforcement agencies in Niagara County in support of public protection measures, programs and services. The funding will aid in crime-fighting efforts, assist with emergency services, and allow agencies to operate more effectively and efficiently.

As advertised, Blondie and Garbage brought buckets of angst and political disdain to Lewiston on Tuesday as part of the "Rage and Rapture" Tour stop at Artpark in Lewiston. They also brought truckloads of talent, stellar production and a batch of hit songs primarily from the 1980s and '90s.

Old Fort Niagara will share American Revolution history with the public on Aug. 5-6, when it presents "Soldiers of the Revolution" from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. This re-enactment complements the daily summer programming currently happening at the fort, which features the British occupation of the fort from 1775-83.

A new princess was crowned at the annual Tuscarora Picnic, which has occurred for 172 years. Quinna Hamby of the Turtle Clan took the title. She recently graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield High School, where she was active in sports such as cross-country, lacrosse and basketball.

The Lewiston Council on the Arts, which sponsors the festival, will continue its efforts to recycle at the event in partnership with Modern Recycling. To emphasize the theme of recycling and reuse, the Lewiston Public Library will offer a free hands-on art activity that will focus on creating art from discarded materials from noon to 4 p.m. each day.
