New York State Sen. Rob Ortt on Thursday delivered a combined $65,000 to law enforcement agencies in Niagara County in support of public protection measures, programs and services. The funding will aid in crime-fighting efforts, assist with emergency services, and allow agencies to operate more effectively and efficiently.
The Niagara Falls Police Department received $20,000 to purchase ballistic helmets for the SWAT team and other protective gear for its officers.
The Lockport Police Department was also presented with a check for $20,000. The department plans to purchase an electronic license plate reader for one of its patrol cars.
The Lewiston and Youngstown police departments received $5,000 each. Both departments plan to purchase body cameras that could assist with documenting incidents or criminal investigations. The cameras could be used as evidence in criminal trials and grand jury presentations. The cameras would also enable prosecutors to use high-quality images and video to show details of injuries and events to judges and juries.
The Niagara County Sheriff's Office was presented with $15,000.
Ortt secured the funding as part of this year's state budget, in addition to public protection funding secured over the past two years.
