Bringing his knowledge and experience in the theater, along with strong leadership and management skills, Bill Patti was selected as the next executive director of the Kenan Center. Patti officially began his duties on March 13, taking the time to learn about the operations of the nonprofit, meeting with staff and transitioning with Susan Przybyl, the former executive director who retired on March 31 after almost 25 years.

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh announced Niagara County is partnering with Niagara University and GreenSheen to host a paint recycling event on Saturday, April 15. Any latex or oil-based paint in its original container can be accepted at no cost. Residents and businesses are allowed to bring up to 50 gallons of paint to the event.

My hope in this column is to offer a perspective on traffic enforcement that shows you the need for this function of law enforcement. Traffic enforcement can save lives, reduce traffic collisions, have positive impacts on the community, and offer crime reduction.

The Niagara County Youth Bureau will return as a sponsor for the 2023 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This program ensures that children who are economically disadvantaged continue to receive nutritious meals during summer vacation. Meals are comparable to the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs (NSBP and NSLP, respectively) throughout the school year.

NYPA fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of the New York Power Authority's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, are now open for the season. Recently, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilson presented local shut-ins, past church members who are no longer able to attend Mass, and low-income individuals, with a little good will and a sure sign of spring. Over 50 people were presented with hand-crocheted baskets, each containing blooming crocuses, along with chocolates donated by Park Side in Buffalo.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the April 1 start of the spring trout fishing season, which provides excellent angling opportunities thanks to DEC's extensive stocking program and wild trout fisheries. DEC stocks nearly 1.9 million trout in waters statewide, beginning in March and lasting until early June.

Construction of the new, 60,000-square-foot Lockport Memorial Hospital (LMH) is proceeding at a record pace as a result of Catholic Health's continued collaboration with the New York State Department of Health, local government officials, and its construction partners. Ground was broken in November 2021 for the $62 million facility - the largest investment in eastern Niagara County in recent years - which is expected to open in September 2023.

USA Niagara Development Corp. (USAN) board of directors met today and approved items that will improve the quality of life and experience in Niagara Falls for both visitors and residents. One item will help meet the city's need for local housing and commercial spaces that will boost pedestrian activity. A second item will help to structurally stabilize a historic property at a state park for future use.
