Helipad at Mount St. Mary's Hospital to complement growing stroke program

"Time is brain" is a statement often used to describe how minutes matter for patients who suffer a stroke. Mount St. Mary's Hospital is moving forward with plans to install a helipad on its campus at 5300 Military Road in Lewiston, which will provide emergency air transport for patients who may require a higher level of care. Currently, emergency ground transport time to Buffalo is 45 minutes; air transport would cut the time to 8 minutes.
Old Fort Niagara to host grand encampment of American Revolution

On Sept. 18-19, the American Revolution returns to Western New York in a big way. Three of the largest 18th century reenactment organizations in North America will converge on Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown for a weekend of large-scale battle reenactments, living history camps and other educational activities. The theme of the event will be "Raid and Retribution" focusing on the Revolution on the New York frontier.
Buffalo Silver Band to perform in Youngstown

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, the Buffalo Silver Band will perform the last of its summer concerts at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church St. The BSB will play a program of film music scores, jazz arrangements, and lighter musical fare. Admission is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
Renovation to Alphonso DiMino Memorial Bandshell completed

Construction is now complete on the relocated and expanded Alphonso DiMino Memorial Bandshell at Academy Park in Lewiston. In fact, a handful of parents wasted no time in bringing their children - contestants in next weekend's Peach Festival Fuzz and Blossom contests - to practice Friday on the new stage.
Olcott Beach closed for season due to public safety concerns

Niagara County Department of Health has issued a beach advisory at Olcott Beach in Olcott. In agreement with the Town of Newfane, the NCDOH will not sample the beach anymore this year, closing the beach for the season.
Porter contends with dog waste, behavior issues at POTL

The Town of Porter announced this week it is considering some changes affecting four-legged friends at Porter on the Lake Town Park. According to Town Supervisor John "Duffy" Johnston, the problem is not with the dogs per se, but more with their owners and the growing problem of behavior and dog waste at the park.

Included was a public hearing to consider a ground-mounted utility-grade solar energy system at 2634 Ridge Road by applicants Kevan Thompson and Janelle Uderitz of DG New York CS III LLC. This represents the latest proposal the town has considered following its earlier lifting of a moratorium on commercial-grade utility solar installations.
Kiwanians gearing up for Niagara County Peach Festival

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston held a news conference Wednesday at Academy Park in Lewiston to announce what's new for the 63rd annual Niagara County Peach Festival. The event returns after having to be canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2021 edition will take place Sept. 9-12 at Academy Park on Center Street.
'Big R': ESS returns to Ransomville for 'King of the Hill' on Sept. 17

Old Fort Niagara to host 'War of 1812 Encampment'

Old Fort Niagara's "War of 1812 Encampment" is set for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-5. This year's event will focus on U.S. troops who garrisoned the fort from June of 1812 through December of 1813, when the British captured the fort.

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh and Legislator Irene Myers are co-sponsoring a household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, Aug. 21, in conjunction with the Town of Lewiston, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, Assemblyman Angelo Morinello and the Niagara County Department of Public Works. The event is open to all Niagara County residents. An appointment is required.

The New York Power Authority board of trustees on Tuesday approved $1.1 million in additional funding to help New York's municipal and rural electric cooperative systems bring more hybrid and electric vehicles into their fleets. The additional financial assistance, available through the Municipal and Rural Cooperative Electric Utilities Electric-Drive Vehicle Program, will expand a long-running clean energy partnership that encourages electric vehicle use and reduces greenhouse gas emissions across New York.
