Niagara County officials seek waiver for REDI projects

As planning continues toward restoration of Niagara County shoreline areas under the New York State Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI), Niagara County legislators are now putting out the call for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to consider waiving the 5% local funding share.

Scams have become even more sophisticated in recent years, and although COVID-19 cases are currently on the decline across the state, scammers continue to seek to take advantage of uncertainty surrounding the virus.
Catholic Health to resume hospital visitations on June 20

Catholic Health is finalizing a plan to safely welcome visitors back to its hospitals on Saturday, June 20. Current visitor restrictions will remain in effect until that time. New processes and guidelines are being finalized based on directives issued Wednesday by the New York State Department of Health (DOH), which include limited visiting hours, limits on the number of visitors at one time, required facial masking, and health screenings for all visitors.

ECMC medical intensive care unit receives national award of excellence

Erie County Medical Center Corp. on Monday announced the hospital's medical intensive care unit (MICU) has again been awarded a silver-level American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Excellence, which is a three-year designation highlighting the unit's achievement of exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall patient satisfaction. ECMC's MICU had previously received the silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence in June 2017 and is one of 16 silver- level Beacon awards in New York for 2020.

NYS: SNAP recipients to receive additional $100 million in food assistance

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) announced more than $100 million in additional emergency food assistance for New Yorkers adversely affected by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. About 750,000 low-income individuals and families enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable benefit for June to help them avoid food insecurity.

The board of directors and the executive director are happy to announce that Lockport CARES will re-open Monday June 15, at our 188 Genesee St. shelter, with modifications, to accept men, women and families experiencing emergency homelessness. Beginning with our 7 p.m. shift on Monday, June 15, guests will be welcomed into our shelter from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week. This new modification will continue for 30 days and then be reconsidered based on safety factors and overall effectiveness of the shelter.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Sunday signed legislation (S.8130-D/A.10516-A) extending the deadline to submit absentee ballots until the day of the election. To be counted, primary ballots must be postmarked by June 23. The governor previously issued executive orders allowing all New Yorkers to vote absentee in the June 23 primary elections and ensuring every New Yorker registered to vote receives a postage-paid absentee ballot application in the mail.
