Aug. 8, 2018, will be etched in history as the first time the Flame of Hope was carried in Scotland. Guided by New York State Police Staff Inspector Steven Nigrelli, the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through the streets of Stirling, as the Flame of Hope was carried into the European Special Olympics Games as part of their 40th anniversary opening ceremony.

The Great New York State Fair visitors who submits the best name for the dory built at the event last year will win it. Those who submit "Name That Boat" entries at the new "Path Through Maritime History: NY Lighthouses and Lifesaving" exhibit will also have the opportunity to win a daily prize of a family pass to the H. Lee White Maritime Museum at Oswego.

Kiwanis Club of Lewiston President Marty Pauly announced Jillian Colucci was named chairwoman of the 2018 Niagara County Peach Festival. Colucci is the first woman to serve in the capacity as chair in the history of the festival, which is celebrating its 61st year Sept. 6-9 at Academy Park on Center Street in Lewiston.

USA Niagara Development Corp. HAS revealed a new sculpture based on the flowing waters of Niagara Falls by local artist Jesse Walp in downtown Niagara Falls. The towering sculpture is located on Old Falls Street where millions of tourists visit each year.

The National Association of County and City Health Officials recognized the Erie County Department of Health as Large Local Health Department of the Year at the 2018 NACCHO annual conference held this week in New Orleans. Niagara County Department of Social Services employees recently held a "Wear Blue Day" to raise awareness about child abuse and to support the Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, a service of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. By wearing blue and donating a dollar or more each, they demonstrated their commitment to preventing child abuse and supporting strong families. The effort raised $250 for the Child Advocacy Center.
