Alas, the reigning and defending titleholder would walk away with his fourth-straight victory - after it was discovered Kiwanian Dean Beltrano cheated!

On July 16, Historical Association of Lewiston Executive Director Patricia Mahoney and I received an email from Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch. The mayor asked if we could assist a woman named Jane Brogan from York, Nebraska. Jane's mother was an avid collector of books that she would collect from library sales around the state.

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University's folk arts program and "Meet Me at the CAM" series have teamed up to present a special fall program, "Time Will Tell: Storytelling Traditions in Western New York." The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 17, and feature speakers from the local arts community.

A naturalization ceremony took place Wednesday morning at Old Fort Niagara for 20 new U.S. citizens. Individuals from 11 different countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Canada, China, Congo (Kinshasa), Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia and Vietnam, took their oaths of allegiance from U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer, U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.

AAA Western and Central New York has kicked off its annual "School's Open - Drive Carefully" campaign as back-to-school season gets underway. AAA's campaign was launched nationally in 1946 to help reduce the number of school-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities. It is now in its 74th year. AAA clubs across the country continue to promote the campaign each fall to remind motorists to watch out for children as they travel to and from school.

Tens of thousands of people have watched one or more shows at Artpark this summer. Few have had an opportunity to actually be in one - that was until Thursday night. Plasticiens Volants' "Pearl: Secrets of the Sea" made its U.S. debut at Artpark in Lewiston.

On Friday, Republican New York State Sen. Rob Ortt held a press conference to address the newly proposed license plate renewal fees that will be mandated by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski joined Ortt as the senator introduced legislation that would waive the fees associated with the mandatory license plate replacement.

First launched in May of 2016 as a two-year pilot project led by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, the Discover Niagara Shuttle will soon be a permanent fixture along the 14-mile "Falls to Fort" route during the busy tourism season.

The all-time attendance record for the Erie County Fair was shattered as the "Best 12 Days of Summer" in Western New York concluded Sunday night. Final 2019 attendance is 1,238,456. This number represents a 3.3% increase from 2018 and makes 2019's number the highest attended County Fair in the history of the Erie County Agricultural Society. The previous all-time record was achieved in 2014 (1,220,101).

Old Fort Niagara is hosting its final reenactment of the season, the "War of 1812 Encampment," on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at the National Historic Landmark in Youngstown. This encampment portrays the British attack on Fort Niagara during the American occupation in December 1813, and includes a special evening battle and daily activities for all.

The Artpark Percussion Garden is annually in bloom. Each year, new interactive installations come to life and add a fresh dimension to the scenic area of the park. The latest piece is a sculptural collaboration titled "The Artpark Bridges Garden." It opened Monday.

Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Broderick was given a citation from the Sanborn Area Historical Society at the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum Festival for providing the society help financing a feasibility study; purchasing the farm in 2002; continuing to support it over the years, including this year; completing the museum's parking lot and connecting the venue to the town sewers, allowing the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum to be open all year for the first time.

Artpark's "Tuesdays in the Park" concert this week was definitely weird. Not weird as in strange, but weird as in Al Yankovic. He brought his "Strings Attached" tour to Lewiston - complete with a top-notch backing band, a 41-piece orchestra, numerous video packages, and, of course, unique costume changes.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston announced the awarding of scholarships to Nicholas Passanese, Suhana Monsalve, Domenic Barile and Miguel Bautista. Lewiston Kiwanis awarded Passanese a $2,000 scholarship, while scholarships of $1,000 each were presented to Monsalve and Barile.

Twelve tall ships ported in Buffalo over the Independence Day weekend, making the Queen City a popular spot with locals and tourists alike. The Buffalo Lighthouse Association served as the host port organizer for the first American harbor on the route of this year's Tall Ships Challenge race series in the Great Lakes.
