Local government sales tax revenue declined by 5.2% in October compared to the same month last year, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. October's sales tax collections totaled $1.4 billion for counties and cities, or $74.4 million less than in October 2019.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced the start of DEC's annual Arbor Day original artwork poster contest. Each year, DEC's Urban and Community Forestry Program commemorates Arbor Day with a poster contest that invites the public to submit original photos and artwork that "celebrate the immeasurable value of trees - ecologically, environmentally, aesthetically and socially."

In response to the recent increase of COVID-19 cases across Western New York, Catholic Health is temporarily suspending visitations at its hospitals and long-term-care facilities effective Friday, Nov. 13. Catholic Health made the decision in consultation with its infection control specialists and with the support of the New York State Department of Health to protect the health and safety of its patients, long-term-care residents, and staff.

Buffalo's rich and detailed presidential and political history is now on display at the Buffalo Presidential Center, which on Monday unveiled its new, permanent, 1,700-square-foot space at the Downtown Central Library in Buffalo. Until now, the center has operated without a permanent home space and has relied on the collaboration and generosity of other local and regional organizations for a place to gather audiences, share information, and display selections from an extensive collection of more than 10,000 political artifacts.

The January 2021 administration of the High School Regents Examination Program is canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Interim State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced Thursday. This cancellation applies to all Regents Examinations that had been scheduled for the January 2021 Regents Examination period. No decisions have been made regarding the June and August 2021 administrations of Regents Examinations or any of the other state assessment programs.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced California was added to New York state's COVID-19 travel advisory. No areas were removed. The advisory requires individuals who have traveled to New York from areas with significant community spread to quarantine for 14 days. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from an area with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average, or an area with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average.
