Facing an unprecedented spike in unemployment insurance applications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York State Department of Labor and the New York State Office of Information Technology Services today announced a "tech surge" in partnership with Google Cloud, Deloitte and Verizon to improve the reliability of the state's online and telephone-based unemployment insurance application systems. The "tech surge" will include critical upgrades to the Department of Labor's technology systems that will increase its capacity to accept and process applications, making it easier for New Yorkers to apply for benefits.

The Western New York COVID-19 Community Response Fund coordinated by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Health Foundation for Western & Central New York, The John R. Oishei Foundation and the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County announced that it has granted $4.5 million to 74 organizations in less than two weeks after the fund was announced.

Kaleida Health on Tuesday announced it has received its most recent planned shipment of protective face masks. Purchased from Foam Depot Inc., the 1 million surgical/procedural masks (pictured), are the types the hospital system is using with its "universal masking" guidelines. They are available for staff and visitors to use in all of our sites, including in hospitals, long-term care and home care.

Six local newsrooms in New York were selected to receive almost $30,000 in funding - CNY Latino, Examiner Media, Niagara Frontier Publications, Spotlight Newspapers, Wallkill Valley Publications Inc., and Watertown Daily Times, with each of these recipients getting $5,000. In this first round, 50 local newsrooms across the U.S. and Canada are receiving $5,000 grants to help cover unexpected costs associated with covering the crisis in their communities. Additional recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.

Beginning as early as today, Tops will be rolling our additional safety measures at all of its 162 stores in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, a press release stated. Those safety measures include installing Plexiglas shields on as many of their frontend registers as possible.

The Kidney Foundation of Western New York is better able to meet the needs of local patients, thanks to a grant from the Odd Fellow & Rebekah Benefit Fund. Produced by Western New York's Kingdom Bound Ministries, the conference featured renowned worship collective North Point Worship along with national youth communicator Reggie Dabbs, as well as respected regional speakers from the U.S. and Canada such as Christopher Hopper and Mike Gordon.

The Niagara County Legislature presented a check for $75,000 at its meeting Tuesday night to the Lockport Locks Heritage District in support of the Lock Tenders tribute monument. The Heritage District has raised $900,000 of the $1.4 million needed for the project, with Niagara County having previously contributed.

For the past three years, I've organized the "Light it up for Lymphedema" campaign for the New York State Chapter of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). The campaign encourages sites around the state and Canada to glow in teal each March 6, World Lymphedema Day, to raise awareness of lymphedema (LE) and lymphatic diseases (LD), chronic swelling conditions that have no cures. If left untreated, LE and LD can lead to deformities, infections and death.

Niagara County Emergency Services Director Jonathan Schultz told the Lake Ontario Planning Committee that current Lake Ontario water levels are already higher than at a similar period a year ago. Schultz said the current water level is 246.59 feet, about 9 inches above where they were on this date one year ago.
