Village of Wilson is open for business

High water levels not impacting summer activities

Village of Wilson Mayor Arthur Lawson announced this week that, despite high water levels in the lake, summer fun, recreation and tourist-related activities are indeed alive and well in the Wilson community and harbor areas.

Lawson said the May 21 announcement by Gov. Andrew Cuomo declaring a state of emergency is strictly proactive in nature and allows the state to respond in a more attentive and efficient manner, if needed.

“Our current state of emergency is also the result of lessons learned from 2017,” Lawson said. “The Village of Wilson would like to thank Gov. Cuomo for his visit and his show of support for our community, and we would like to remind Gov. Cuomo we have fish up here waiting to be caught when he comes back to visit.”

In addition to tourism activities generated by the Wilson Harbor, local businesses are gearing up for another busy summer.

“Whether you are coming to Wilson to enjoy dining at one of our restaurants, taking photos at one of our beautiful sunsets, enjoying New York’s finest fishing, visiting our wineries along the Niagara Wine Trail, the historic cobblestone homes dating back to as early as 1825, taking in our history along the Seaway Trail, taking your motorcycle on a leisurely ride, (the) Tuesday evening farmers market, free ‘Star Search’ evenings with local astronomers, or coming to enjoy other recreational activities, it is business as usual in the Village of Wilson,” Lawson said.

At this point, Wilson not been impacted by the high water. Accordingly, Lawson invited readers to visit the community.

He noted with pride the Wilson Harbor, located on Lake Ontario, at the mouth of Twelve Mile Creek, is the largest natural harbor on the south shore of Lake Ontario. It is home to 476 slips, two boat launch lanes and 15 charter boats. “

The Wilson Harbor generates economic benefits totaling $4,720,298 for the entire Wilson community, Lawson said. He explained the tourism and recreation activities the Wilson Harbor generates are the heart of the local economy.
