Poloncarz, Jancewicz join law enforcement to announce holiday DWI enforcement campaign

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined earlier this week by Commissioner of Central Police Services James Jancewicz and John Sullivan, director of the Erie County STOP-DWI office, alongside members of local and state law enforcement to reinforce a holiday safety message and announce the beginning of extra patrols as part of the state and national DWI enforcement campaign.

The Island's two veterans organizations joined forces to honor two members of the local media. At a meeting held Nov. 29 at the Grand Island Moose Lodge 180, representatives of Charles N. DeGlopper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9249 and Grand Island American Legion Post 1346 presented certificates of appreciation and gift certificates to the Village Inn to Jodi Robinson of Isledegrande.com and Larry Austin, editor of the Island Dispatch.
Chris Jacobs honors Veteran of the Month Dennis Smilinich

New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs announced City of Tonawanda resident and retired U.S. Army veteran Dennis Smilinich was selected as the 60th Senate District Veteran of the Month for December. Jacobs made the announcement and presented Smilinich with a proclamation at a meeting of the Tonawanda's American Legion Post 264.
Former Islander faces cliffs, snakes, bears in Appalachian Trail hike

Near the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, in Maine, hikers walk through a wilderness that stretches unbroken for 100 miles. It is called the One Hundred Mile Wilderness. Jeff Bullock, 32, a Grand Island High School graduate, who hiked the entire 2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail in six months, described the wilderness as "peaceful."
Sign of season: Santa Land brings holiday family fun to Chestnut Ridge Park

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry has announced the return of Santa Land to Chestnut Ridge Park. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10. The Parks Department is partnering with the Chestnut Ridge Conservancy and the Town of Orchard Park Recreation Department again this year to present the popular weekend event, which features free family activities to brighten the holiday spirit.

Poloncarz, Jancewicz review falling DWI numbers

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined Monday by Commissioner of Central Police Services James Jancewicz, Director of the Erie County STOP-DWI Office John Sullivan, and Chief of the Orchard Park Police Department Mark Pacholec to review driving while intoxicated incidents during the summer months across Erie County. Data from the STOP-DWI office indicates DWI arrests for the period of July 3 through Sept. 17 are down from last year.

Buffalo River restoration effort brings partners together at Seneca Bluffs Natural Habitat Park

Erie County's Seneca Bluffs Natural Habitat Park on Seneca Street in Buffalo was the site Friday for a multitude of volunteers helping to beautify and protect the park itself and the adjoining waters of the Buffalo River. Personnel from the Erie County environment and planning and parks departments were joined by counterparts from Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Labatt USA, Pegula Sports Entertainment, the Buffalo Sabres, Try-It Distributing and WNY PRISM to clean up the habitat area, remove invasive species, plant native pollinators and grasses, and place new trees and shrubs at the site.
