The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) is announcing scheduled dates for its free rabies vaccination clinics on Saturday, Sept. 19, and Tuesday, Sept. 29. Registrations will be required for these events, and the online registration will open Sept. 9. No walk-ins will be permitted. Locations, times and registration information for these events will be announced Sept. 9. Dogs, cats and ferrets that are 4 months of age and older are eligible for this clinic.

The decision by Amazon and its developer, Trammell Crow Co., to withdraw its application to build a 3.8-million-square-foot national distribution center on a 145.4-acre site at 2780 Long Road on Grand Island, essentially came down to growing and potentially uncertain costs. Paddles Up, an annual summer event at Beaver Island State Park, will have to wait until 2021 to celebrate its 15th year in the Niagara River. The July 4th Independence Day holiday has traditionally been the day Town of Grand Island residents celebrate the community like few others in this country. It is a holiday they truly enjoy by inviting family and friends for activities from early morning to late evening when a spectacular fireworks show would light up the sky over the Island and even cause travelers along Interstate 190 to pull over in awe of the colorful displays.

Bill Baldwin, a park entertainer for nearly 30 years who played Black Bart - among many roles - in the popular Western shows, proudly said he was shot and fell to the ground in Western Town 28,678 times during his Fantasy Island career. Upon hearing the park was closing, he contacted his friend, Jay Wilcox, a maintenance supervisor at the park for 20 years and now chief operating officer of Empire Adventures Inc. They began brainstorming about what it would take to bring the park back under local ownership and led by a team of former employees.

Ronnie Mansour had one word to describe his exuberance of the successful "Fuccillo Feeds the Front Lines" promotion being held this month: "HUUUGE," bellowed the general manager of Fuccillo Chevrolet on Grand Island in his best Billy Fuccillo Sr. voice. His team delivered enough meals from the Brick Oven Pizzeria & Pub to feed more than 100 members of the Island's police and fire departments on June 18.

The Buffalo City Mission received a $20,000 donation from Citi, in collaboration with the National Disability Institute (NDI), to help advance its work with the homeless community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The City Mission is one of just 39 national community-based nonprofit organizations to receive a share of a $1 million donation from Citi, which is helping organizations provide direct services to low-income people with disabilities.

When John C. Whitney, P.E., joined the Town of Grand Island's Department of Engineering & Water Resources in 1986, the force main sewer line from the South Grand Island Bridge to Whitehaven Road was only 8 years old. After 42 years of service, that line is now being replaced due to its deteriorated condition.

The Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island followed the state and county mandate for all restaurants to close its doors in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once restaurants offered takeout and delivery services in the weeks following, the BLC began brainstorming on how it could do the same and provide opportunities for some of its furloughed restaurant staff.

Casey's Cabana, a seasonal summer restaurant at 1437 Ferry Road on the shores of the Niagara River, was founded by three Grand Island High School students. It will open its third season at 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, for takeout and free delivery to local residents.
