Girl Scouts of Western New York will offer a free drive-thru Fall Fest for families to provide girls in grades K-12 and adults ages 18 and older with an opportunity to have some family-fun and join Girl Scouts for the new program year. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.4336/A.6163) requiring all passengers in motor vehicles over the age of 16 to wear a seat belt. Currently, passengers aged 16 and older are only required to wear a seat belt in the front passenger seat next to the driver.

The reopening plan provides for in-person instruction, remote learning, and a hybrid of the two approaches as required by NYSED. AAA Western and Central New York has heard from many young drivers and their parents who are inquiring about the five-hour prelicensing course that is required in New York state to obtain a driver's license. With classroom instruction not allowed in New York at this time, AAA driver training is closely following state mandates and cannot legally offer the course.

The officers of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association voted to delay the official start date of the fall 2020 sports season, cancel the fall 2020 regional and state championships, and prepare to implement a condensed season schedule in January 2021 if high school sports remain prohibited throughout 2020 due to COVID-19. This decision comes at the recommendation of the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 task force when it convened as a working group for the third time Thursday morning.

The university said it is the first in the country to provide this clean-sleep solution, which was made available by Spry Therapeutics, a health and wellness technology company owned by brothers and NU alumni Bill and Bob Purdy.

On Saturday, May 23, Niagara County Community College hosted a virtual commencement celebration for the Class of 2020, recognizing over 900 graduates. The prerecorded video allowed graduates to submit a photo of themselves, future plans, and messages of appreciation to friends and family. Additionally, the video included remarks from SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson, and NCCC President William Murabito.

"One thing that we can offer right now is the cloth masks. Last week, we offered those free cloth masks through Niagara County Department of Emergency Management to businesses who needed to give them to their essential workers. We would now like to open that up to all of our area businesses. We gave out over 15,000 masks in the last week through that program. And we now want to offer this to businesses who are starting about their reopening process, and will need them for all of their employees most likely when that occurs."

Western New York health care and medical research leaders are joining forces in an effort to uncover hidden information from the cells of those who have been exposed to the novel coronavirus, seeking insights on how best to care for those who develop COVID-19 illness. To the health care workers who care for them, people who are hospitalized with COVID-19 are an extremely disconcerting patient population. There is no proven treatment and, while the most extreme critical care measures will help some recover fully, in other cases, they, tragically, have no effect.
