United Way of Greater Niagara partners with General Motors Lockport to send funds to Puerto Rico

The United Way of Greater Niagara received a check for $1,829 from General Motors Plant in Lockport to be sent to Puerto Rico to assist the victims of Hurricane Maria. UWGN reached out to Fondos Unidos of San Juan (United Way of San Juan) in Puerto Rico to benefit from these funds and distribute them in the community after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. expected to have 400 high school students on hand Sunday at Antonio's Restaurant, Banquet & Conference Center for its annual "Senior Prom." The event is an intergenerational gathering that pairs a high school student with a senior citizen "date" for a day of dinner, dancing, music and fun.
Preserving Lewiston's history

A group of dedicated Historical Association of Lewiston volunteers were out in force Saturday to wash and wax Lewiston's two landmark statues: the Freedom Crossing Monument on the waterfront, and the Tuscarora Heroes Monument at Portage Road and Center Street. The volunteers perform the annual maintenance to preserve the luster and quality of the bronze sculptures.

Cuomo announces winners of Western New York Smart Growth Community Fund

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced four Western New York communities have been selected to receive up to $10 million in funding from the Buffalo Billion II initiative. The Niagara Power collegiate baseball team entertained kids, families and fans at Sal Maglie Stadium from 2007 to 2015. After two whole summers removed from the New York Collegiate Baseball League, the Power have come back home to Niagara Falls. Poloncarz was joined Monday by Commissioner of Central Police Services James Jancewicz, Director of the Erie County STOP-DWI Office John Sullivan, and Chief of the Orchard Park Police Department Mark Pacholec to review driving while intoxicated incidents during the summer months across Erie County. Data from the STOP-DWI office indicates DWI arrests for the period of July 3 through Sept. 17 are down from last year.

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper has announced the completion of the Hyde Park Lake living shoreline project, a two-year effort in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls and the Niagara River Greenway Ecological Standing Committee. The project enhanced 600 linear feet of shoreline located near the Rose Garden on the eastern end of Hyde Park Lake.
