Clean UP Grand Island 2024 set for April 20

Sat, Apr 6th 2024 11:10 am

Clean UP Grand Island 2024, an annual community event coinciding with Earth Day, is slated for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 20. It is organized by the Town of Grand Island in partnership with the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, Grand Island Rotary Club, the Grand Island Lions Club and the Niagara River Greenway. Residents are invited to participate.

Rotary Club’s Sherry Miller said, “With the snow melted away and the foliage not yet in bloom, it's easy to identify areas where trash and debris have accumulated over winter and are in need of removal. All that's needed is a few hours of your time, a little passion to keep nature clean, and a heart of service. You can put a team together or attend as an individual. Either way, please join us and help Clean UP Grand Island!”

Volunteers are asked to meet at Grand Island Town Hall where trash pick-up bags and maps will be distributed. Organizers report that 30 targeted areas throughout the Island will be included in this year’s Clean UP.

The volunteers will clean up their assigned areas and then return loaded bags to the dumpster at Town Hall where free coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts will be available.

Helping to coordinate the effort will be Grand Island Superintendent of Highways Dick Crawford and the Chamber of Commerce’s Eric Fiebelkorn.

Those interested in participating are asked to register online at https://form.jotform.com/240805109844052.

Underage volunteers will need to be accompanied by an adult. Participants are encouraged to stay hydrated and to wear proper attire (gloves, work/rain boots) and insect repellent. In addition, groups wishing to work along heavily trafficked roads are requested to speak with Crawford to be advised of regulations and safety practices required.

Details on targeted Island areas scheduled for cleanup are available at the Clean Up Grand Island 2024 site at https://shorturl.at/bjLR4.

For more information, Crawford can be contacted via email at [email protected] or 716-818-6992. Fiebelkorn can be reached at 716-319-7292.
