Cuomo: $49 million for 20 Lake Ontario REDI projects in Niagara & Orleans counties

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced the state is providing $49 million to advance 20 projects in Niagara and Orleans counties as part of the first round of funding under the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. Cuomo launched REDI in May to increase the resilience of shoreline communities and bolster economic development in the region.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 welcomed a handful of recuperating D.C.-area soldiers to Lewiston on Sunday. The men were taken out on three charter boats to fish for bass and lake trout along the river. They then returned to Water Street for lunch at Lower Niagara Moose Lodge No. 584.

On Saturday, John Yurtchuk, chair of the board of trustees of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Society Inc., announced a five-year extension of Maestro JoAnn Falletta's contract with the BPO, which was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. The new contract will ensure her legacy of bringing live symphonic music to the Western New York Region through the 2025-26 season.

Congressman Brian Higgins on Wednesday joined Niagara Falls City School District Superintendent Mark Laurrie in announcing a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education totaling over $2.49 million over a five-year grant period for Niagara Falls Schools. The award, over $498,000 annually, will put additional mental health resources in schools, increase community and family outreach, provide training to help teachers identify needs early, and expand the pipeline of mental health professionals into the school setting to reduce shortages.

VFW's 'Circle of Honor' arrives in Lewiston

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487's "Circle of Honor" started to be assembled on Wednesday morning. Patrol cars from the Lewiston Police Department and Niagara County Sheriff's Office escorted stone pillars down Center Street and into Academy Park. Project manager Rocco DelGrosso and his team then began to install the monument pieces.
