Niagara SPCA releases external audit results; no findings of animal mistreatment

The Niagara SPCA recently underwent an external audit completed by Barbara Carr, former CEO of the SPCA Serving Erie County and currently a senior shelter consultant. The entire report is posted on the Niagara SPCA website (www.niagaraspca.org). Below is a summary of some of her recommendations.
NYPA authorizes $52 million for final phase of multimillion-dollar project to improve digital communication infrastructure

The New York Power Authority board of trustees approved $52 million for the final phase of construction for new digital communication systems on NYPA transmission lines, improving the efficiency and reliability of the New York State electricity system.

UB: Brain model offers new insights into damage caused by stroke and other injuries

A University at Buffalo neuroimaging researcher has developed a computer model of the human brain that more realistically simulates actual patterns of brain impairment than existing methods. The novel advancement represents the union of two established approaches to create a digital simulation environment that could help stroke victims and patients with other brain injuries by serving as a testing ground for hypotheses about specific neurological damage.

The American Red Cross currently has a critical need for blood donors of all blood types - especially type O - and platelet donors to make an appointment now to give and help replenish the blood supply after the holiday weeks. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of type O blood. To help tackle the critical need, the Red Cross and NFL are working together to offer one lucky winner a trip to Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

Cuomo: $300 million plan to reimagine Erie Canal

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday unveiled the 29th proposal of his 2020 State of the State: a $300 million plan to reimagine the Erie Canal by creating recreational activities on the Canal to boost tourism, mitigating flooding, enhancing irrigation and recreational fishing and restoring wetlands. Cuomo is recommending the New York Power Authority board, which now oversees the Canal Corp. as a subsidiary, approve the $300 million investment over the next five years at the board's January meeting.

New York Sea Grant has published New York's Great Lakes Coastal Resilience Index: A Community Self-Assessment guide for understanding how prepared a community is for coastal flooding and weather disasters such as wind and ice storms, ice jams and flash flooding. The publication can be read and downloaded in the "Resource: Tools" section of the New York Sea Grant website at www.seagrant.sunysb.edu/ccd/.

Buffalo Botanical Gardens' expansion projects $9.1 million annual economic impact

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society Inc. is currently completing the schematic design phase for a multimillion-dollar expansion that would add 40,000 square-feet to the historic structure. This project will help the Botanical Gardens meet the needs of the community, spark surrounding development - and generate over $9.1 million in economic impact, while creating hundreds of new jobs, the venue stated.

'The Nutcracker' in pictures
