Over Memorial Day weekend, Hibbard's Original Frozen Custard held a fundraiser for VFW Downriver Post 7487, which maintains the "Circle of Honor" memorial across the street in Academy Park. Proceeds from the custard cookies - a collaboration between Hibbard's and the Village Bake Shoppe - will go toward upkeep at the tribute to Lewiston veterans.

After 15 months of isolation due to the pandemic, miraculously the Youngstown Business & Professional Association was able to hold our 11th annual "Here Comes Summer Street Dance & Car Cruise." It was held on June 17 (having been rescheduled from 2020).

Guided by its strategic plan to provide excellence in all phases of the student living-learning experience, Niagara University will break ground next month on an $11.5 million upgrade to the Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin in July, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Funding for the project includes a $1 million grant from the NYS Higher Education Capital Matching program (HECap), as well as other private donations and university investments.

Lewiston Council on the Arts and the Lewiston Public Library have teamed up to present a new event for children of all ages. "Bug Fest," an afternoon of insect-related activities, displays and demonstrations, will take place Saturday, July 10, in Seneca "Bug" Park, 308 S. Eighth St., Lewiston.

From July 2-4, the French and Indian War Encampment will return to Old Fort Niagara. The three-day event will feature six battle reenactments, two living history camps, dozens of period artisans and merchants, artillery firing demonstrations and dramatic recreations of Native American diplomacy.

The Lewiston Council on the Arts has announced, "Due to the COVID pandemic, our original plan was to decrease the number of artists at the Lewiston Art Festival. Since COVID restrictions have been lifted, we can now accommodate more artists - and have waived the $25 late fee!"

After a year without festivals, most concerts and large-scale events in general, the Lewiston Garden Club was the brave organization willing to take the first crack at staging a mass gathering in what we all hope is a post-coronavirus world. GardenFest returned to Center Street over the weekend, and drew attendees looking to bolster their gardens, plant flowers and admire the green thumb of residents who volunteered to show off their prized lawn configurations.

Twenty-four additional beds will soon be available at Mount St. Mary's Hospital's Clearview Treatment Services to accommodate the growing need for inpatient treatment for individuals suffering from substance use disorders. Hospital and Catholic Health leadership, Clearview staff, and community partners attended a dedication and open house of the renovated treatment unit housed on the third floor of the hospital, located at 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.

Michael Hibbard's original Gallo restaurant site recently reopened as Gallo Loco, serving almost a dozen different types of taco (torta or bowl), plus fajitas, quesadillas, queso nachos and salads. Lewiston Stone House owner Emery Simon intends to build a patio in front of his bar and restaurant at 755 Center St. Plans call for seating of about 20 guests inside of a gated rectangle atop the existing sidewalk.
