LCA to debut 'Bug Fest' on July 10

Lewiston Council on the Arts and the Lewiston Public Library have teamed up to present a new event for children of all ages. "Bug Fest," an afternoon of insect-related activities, displays and demonstrations, will take place Saturday, July 10, in Seneca "Bug" Park, 308 S. Eighth St., Lewiston.

Participants can watch the chips fly as Chainsaw Chix Sara Wojtowecz carves a bookworm out of a hunk of wood; listen to a story by children's librarian Ann Seijka; see a performance by the Daughters of Creative Sound; observe a butterfly release; demo a beehive; taste local honey; and enjoy an afternoon celebrating bugs.

LCA said “Bring a blanket so your pod can sit and enjoy the story and performance. Children (and adults) are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite bug! There will be a special appearance by Lord and Lady Bugg for photo ops.”

Masks are recommended for unvaccinated adults and children over 2 years of age. Each registered child will receive a goodie bag.

√ Group 1 (limited to 50 kids) is 1-2:15 p.m.

√ Group 2 (limited to 50 kids) is 2:30-3:45 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, a rain date is set for July 17.

“Bug Fest” is sponsored by New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, with a decentralization grant administered through Arts Services Initiative. The Lewiston Public Library also will offer bug displays on loan from 4 H Club member Samantha Biniecki. Mary Kate Fonzi, who is a biologist, has a display at the library and said she hopes kids will get over the "gross" factor and myths surrounding this fascinating animal group.
