Niagara County SPCA dealing with overcrowding, financial issues

It's time for a serious message from the shelter. The Niagara County SPCA made the commitment to become a no-kill shelter in July of 2012, and we consistently work toward saving every animal that we can regardless of cost; regardless of physical space; regardless of the constraints in staffing, compensation from contracts and resources in general.

Without a doubt it has been a struggle for the shelter both financially and in terms of space.

Homeland Security urged to set up shop at NFARS

Members of Western New York's Congressional delegation are pressing the Department of Homeland Security to establish missions at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

In a letter to the acting secretary of DHS, Congressmen Chris Collins and Brian Higgins, joined U.S. sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer in urging the department to consider NFARS as a regional location for several DHS missions, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customers and Border Protection, and certain operations of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Town of Niagara Supervisor Steve Richards has vowed to clear his name in the 28-count indictment brought against him in State Supreme Court in Lockport last Friday.

A plea of not guilty was entered before Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. Since then, neither Richards nor his lawyer, Rodney Personius, nor town councilmen known to have been subpoenaed to testify during the preceding grand jury investigation have been willing to comment.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced the arrest of Steven C. Richards, the Town of Niagara supervisor, for "engaging in an ongoing scheme to steal town property and use town employees and equipment for his own personal gain." The Joint Task Force on Public Integrity is a cooperative effort between Schneiderman's and DiNapoli's offices to "root out public corruption and maximize the resources of each office."
