The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Inc. is hosting a video competition for high school and middle school students as one of a number of events and activities that will complement the 2017 Topcoder Open hosted by the BNMC in October. TCO is a prestigious programming, design and data science competition that attracts some of the world's most talented design and technology experts.

St. Peter R.C. School has been formally accepted into Cohort 4 of the Buffalo Diocese STREAM initiative. "STREAM" is an integrated approach to education that brings science, technology, religion, engineering the arts and mathematics to all students in all grades. The goal is to better prepare students for successful careers in the 21st century workforce.

The 28th annual Lewiston Porter/Niagara Pioneer alumni soccer game will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, on the Lewiston-Porter Central School District campus on Creek Road in Lewiston. Gerrard P. Bushell, president and CEO of DASNY, announced more than $10 million in upgrades have been completed at SUNY Buffalo State College Alfred State College and the University at Buffalo. The work is part of approximately $30 million in upgrades to SUNY campuses throughout New York state completed by DASNY over the course of 90 days - ready in time for students to begin the fall semester.

The Niagara-Wheatfield girls soccer team came into Tuesday as the No. 4 large school in Western New York - and undefeated, at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in league. Staring it down was the also-undefeated Grand Island Vikings, sitting at No. 2.

Mason's Mission, a nonprofit organization formed to assist families with special needs, announced the grand-opening of its first special needs playground at 6570 Campbell Blvd., Pendleton. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. New York State Sen. Robert Ortt will be on hand to help dedicate the site. The public is invited to attend.

As announced Thursday on "The John Murphy Show" on MSG Network and WGR Sports Radio 550, Pegula Sports and Entertainment will produce a series of Western New York high school football games presented by the DENT Concussion Center focusing on teams from the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association. The games will take place at New Era Field and air live on MSG Network and OneBuffalo.com. Chris Brown will call play-by-play and Donald Jones will serve as analyst.

Empire State Development has announced its Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR) has awarded a Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) designation to the University at Buffalo. The University at Buffalo Center for Advanced Technology in Big Data & Health Sciences (UB CAT) will focus on big data and medicine, with an emphasis on drug development, medical devices and diagnostics.

Empire State Development on Thursday announced a $3.2 million Buffalo Billion initiative lead by Alfred State College is moving forward with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art welding lab, and renovations of the existing machine tool lab and auto lab for the use of the advanced manufacturing students. Burgard High School's advanced manufacturing program continues to be a pipeline for students interested in welding, automotive and other cutting-edge manufacturing careers.

Every year, dozens of children die due to heatstroke from being left in a hot car for too long. Nineteen children have already passed away this year; 723 since 1998 (according to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians). While an overwhelming majority of these deaths were accidental, they were preventable.

On Friday, more than 220 Buffalo Prep students participated in the first "Buffalo Prep Goes Green" event, which involved planting a commemorative tree at the site of the organization's future home on the University at Buffalo south campus. The facility's upgrades will allow Buffalo Prep to offer more services and welcome more students. It is set to open next year.

New York Sen. Rob Ortt delivered a total of $35,000 in ceremonial checks to the public libraries in eastern Niagara County. Ortt secured the funding as part of the 2017-18 state budget in addition to funding secured last year for public libraries throughout his district.
