The "digital divide" - a common term for the lack of internet access and technological devices for K-12 students - is especially consequential during the pandemic when students are remote learning, according to a new report by the New York Educational Conference Board (ECB), a coalition of seven statewide educational organizations.

Niagara University has received a $375,000 grant from The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to address the growing mental health needs on campus and in the community. The funding will be used to establish accessible pathways and incremental credentials to improve the quality and availability of services offered by the current and future workforce in support of the region's most vulnerable children and families.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday released updated guidance for infection rates and testing protocols on college campuses. For nearly two decades, the Lighthouse Free Medical Clinic (LFMC) has provided free medical and preventive care to uninsured and underinsured residents of Buffalo. Founded and managed by students from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, the nonprofit clinic continues to expand its services while adjusting to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, both in its operations and its fundraising activities.

Dr. Timothy Osberg, professor of psychology at Niagara University, has been a longtime advocate of spreading awareness of mental health issues on campus. So, when Niagara University's Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement hosted a workshop for individuals to become trained mental health first aid instructors as part of a larger effort to increase the mental health literacy of the Niagara County region, he decided to participate.

The Board of Education met this past Monday for a lengthy work session. The board began with a briefing on policy updates and review. The BOE policy committee, led by board member Anne Orr, meets monthly to review and recommend new state and federal additions and amendments. In addition, the policy committee reviews each section of the manual annually, to keep the policy manual up-to-date and relevant.
