The Town of Niagara distributed its $8.2 million tentative budget for 2015 Wednesday night at Town Hall. It announced a 41-cent per $1,000 of assessed valuation tax increase for homesteads, and a 55-cent per $1,000 of assessed valuation increase for non-homestead properties.

The Niagara-Wheatfield School Board voted Wednesday to reinstate the athletic, music, theater and other extracurricular activities that were cut from the 2014-15 budget earlier this year. The sudden vote was the result of a report provided by Superintendent Lynn Marie Fusco, which revealed an unanticipated source of funding available to support the programs.
Fusco said that, as a result of 11 retirements and resignations processed after the budget was put into place, the district had in excess of $158,000, originally slated for those employees' salaries, available for use. Fusco said reinstating the extracurriculars would cost about $111,000, leaving just under $50,000 available for reserve.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced his office is committing up to $40 million in additional funding to organizations that provide free, high-quality housing counseling and legal services to struggling homeowners around New York through his homeowner protection program. The new funding, which will extend the program for an additional two years, brings the total commitment of funds by the attorney general's office to $100 million over five years to help New York families stay in their homes.
The HOPP program is designed to provide free housing counseling and legal services to homeowners facing foreclosure.

New funding will support restoration of the Buffalo River and put it on track to be removed from the list of Great Lakes "toxic hotspots" by 2019, the Great Lakes Commission announced in Buffalo, site of its annual meeting. Nearly $4.7 million will go to restoring degraded shoreline and create natural habitat at seven sites along the river.
