Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced more than $328 million in home heating aid is now available for low- and middle-income New Yorkers who need assistance keeping their homes warm during the coming winter season. Applications are now being accepted for the Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides federal funding to assist homeowners and renters with their heating costs during the cold weather months.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is set to install an extension of "The Art of Suffrage" exhibit on Nov. 2. The display will be located at Power City Eatery on Third Street in Niagara Falls. It commemorates the 19th Amendment, which secured the right of women to vote.
Law mandating seat belt use in rear of all vehicles takes effect

New York's new rear seat belt law goes into effect Sunday, Nov. 1, requiring all passengers to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle, including passengers of ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft. Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York. The new law, championed by AAA New York State, will save lives and prevent injuries across state roadways by requiring all occupants in a motor vehicle to buckle up.

As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding all New Yorkers to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. They should also clean those units and test them to insure they are working. Alarms equipped with removable batteries should have them replaced.

Niagara County Department of Health: Results of rapid testing of school staff 'very encouraging'

The Niagara County Department of Health on Friday said it has completed voluntary, rapid testing days of teachers and staff in five school districts and, thus far, the results are not showing any significant presence of COVID-19 in schools. According to the health department, 574 tests have been completed, with 571 negative results to just three positives.

Heart, Love & Soul opens one-stop services center for homeless

On Wednesday, local officials were on hand as Heart, Love & Soul food pantry cut the ribbon on the newly constructed Sr. Beth Brosmer Center. The center will house its new Daybreak program - a collaboratively designed one-stop program involving more than 30 partner agencies. The organization says the Daybreak program will increase access to services and offer additional support for people experiencing homelessness.
Local officials call on residents to demand state protect theater industry

Earlier this week, New York state's movie theater industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced theaters across the state (except for NYC) could finally begin to reopen. Per state safety guidelines, theaters can only maintain a 25% capacity; with no more than 50 people in front of each movie screen.

Recently, Niagara Wheatfield High School celebrated the completion of its new multipurpose athletic field. The project, which was estimated to cost $7.6 million, included an all-new synthetic turf field and is able to accommodate football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. The project also included new bleachers (able to seat 2,000 home and 500 away fans), scoreboards, lights, fencing and backstops.

Originally slated to end this month, the exhibit will continue its global premiere in Western New York. Fire at Niagara Frontier Country Club

On Wednesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a phone call from an alarm company stating a fire alarm was activated at the Niagara Frontier Country Club. Deputies and fire fighters responded to the scene and reported smoke coming from the main building at the country club. Once inside, it was the discovered there was a fire coming from kitchen area of the country club.
