A road less traveled: Older men struggle more than women as driving decreases

New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety finds that, as older adults reduce their driving, men report having fewer resources for making important life decisions. Compared to women, men over age 65 who have reduced their driving in the past year report lower levels of social support when it comes to advice, suggestions and information about issues they may be facing.

Niagara County Legislature takes on NYS Article 10 law

The Niagara County Legislature is expected to take up four resolutions tonight directed squarely at New York's Article 10 law, which involves the siting of electric generating facilities in this state. The law, which legislators said took away local control over siting decision and instead gave control to the Board of Electric Generation Siting and the Environment, has become a source of controversy as large wind and solar developers have descended on Niagara County to site their facilities.

For the past three years, I've organized the "Light it up for Lymphedema" campaign for the New York State Chapter of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). The campaign encourages sites around the state and Canada to glow in teal each March 6, World Lymphedema Day, to raise awareness of lymphedema (LE) and lymphatic diseases (LD), chronic swelling conditions that have no cures. If left untreated, LE and LD can lead to deformities, infections and death.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, ABC and ESPN will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the iconic "Miracle on Ice" - when the United States hockey team defeated the heavily favored then Soviet Union on Feb. 22, 1980, in their run to a gold medal. Special programming across ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 will air throughout the day, including a one-hour "SportsCenter Special: Miracle on Ice at 40" and Walt Disney Pictures' "Miracle."

Representatives from Price Rite Marketplace and the University at Buffalo football team donated 43 "sacks" of food to New Beginnings Food Pantry on Tuesday at Price Rite Marketplace of Amherst. The donation was a result of the football team's 43 sacks this season and included canned goods, fresh produce, rice, pasta and water.

DEC announces new agreements to comprehensively address former Tonawanda Coke facility contamination

New York Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the acceptance of a section of the former Tonawanda Coke Corporation property into the state's brownfield cleanup program, and the execution of a new consent order with Honeywell International to hold the company responsible for the cleanup of other sections of the former plant site under the state's superfund program. Together, the agreements with Riverview Innovation & Technology Campus Inc. (Riverview) and Honeywell provide a successful path forward in the comprehensive removal of contamination at the site and will facilitate the area's redevelopment to benefit the community.

A quick Google search will show the word "empower" means to give someone the authority or power to do something; or make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights. Similar words of both definition, from that same search include: authorize, emancipate, unshackle and permit. Bearing this in mind might explain why United Cerebral Palsy Association of Niagara County Inc. took it on as its nomenclature and became Empower in 2015.
