The New York State Office for the Aging encourages older New Yorkers with Medicare to review and make any needed changes to their health plans and prescription drug coverage for the upcoming year before the Medicare open enrollment period ends on Dec. 7. Plan changes take effect Jan. 1, 2020.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced House passage of bipartisan legislation that will push back against the increasing volume of illegal robocalls Americans are faced with, and strengthen law enforcement's ability to prosecute those responsible. S. 151, the Pallone-Thune TRACED Act, requires every call to be verified through a nationwide caller authentication system, allows the blocking of spam calls, and empowers the Federal Communications Commission to go after scammers by lengthening the statute of limitations for these violations and imposing greater fines.

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in downtown Niagara Falls welcomed the holiday season Wednesday night. A free event was held on Seneca Square Bridge, and featured Santa and Mrs. Claus, Buffalo sports mascots and Seneca Gaming Corp. leaders. A large crowd was welcomed and invited to watch as the Christmas tree was lit. Award-winning singer, actor and adopted Western New Yorker Vanessa Williams made a special appearance, performing a trio of songs for the audience.
Restaurant employee confirmed for hepatitis A virus; Niagara Falls Taco Bell patrons during specific timeframe may have been exposed

Niagara County Public Health Director Daniel J. Stapleton on Wednesday announced a case of hepatitis A virus in a local restaurant worker. The Niagara County Department of Health launched a disease investigation on Tuesday, directly after receiving notification of the suspected case. Following laboratory testing, interviews and a restaurant inspection, an employee who handles food at Taco Bell on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Niagara Falls was identified with the hepatitis A virus.

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS) announced the launch of a new media campaign reminding people of the warning signs of addiction and overdoses, and that addiction can happen to anyone. It is designed to reach people traveling for the holidays and will run through the end of December. The campaign is partially funded with money awarded to New York State under the federal state opioid response grant.

There is limit of one coat per person, and proper identification is needed. Through its first two events, more than 10,000 coats were distributed.
Erie County credit rating boom: Kroll Bond Rating Agency assigns AA-, 'stable' outlook to county bonds

The Erie County Division of Budget and Management announced Kroll Bond Rating Agency ("KBRA") assigned a long-term rating of AA- and a "stable" outlook for Erie County bonds, another affirmative sign from an independent financial entity that the county's fiscal profile is strong and stable in 2019. In early November, Moody's Investor's Service ("Moody's") upgraded Erie County's credit rating to A1, up from A2, and noted a "stable" outlook for the county, as well, marking the highest rating the county has reached with Moody's since 1976.
