Lindsey Sterner, a 39-year-old mother of two who works at Fresenius Kabi on Grand Island, described her younger child as a miracle. Miles, age 17 months, was conceived after Sterner had completed treatments for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Norine Hibschweiler Eaton, who is being honored as a survivor in Grand Island's third annual Zumbathon, to be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the Radisson Niagara, has had a life full of love and loss, illness, and adventure. In 1979, Norine Hibschweiler went on a "date derby" with a bunch of single friends. The date derby involved visiting bars in Buffalo and collecting souvenirs, such as matches and napkins. For her efforts, Hibschweiler won the distinction of having "the most promising future."

The Erie County Agricultural Society will present the 19th annual Western New York Preview Classic. The show is scheduled to take place inside the Agriculture Discovery Center at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg from May 31 to June 2. More than $6,000 in cash awards and premiums will be presented during this New York Livestock Circuit-approved show.

The Erie County Department of Central Police Services, in collaboration with the Office of Public Advocacy and the Town of Cheektowaga Police Department, will host a domestic violence training course for call-takers and dispatchers from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 20. This is the first time this training has been conducted in Erie County.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz recently joined Erie County Department of Social Services Commissioner Marie Cannon and foster care advocates to celebrate National Foster Care Month. Poloncarz recognized the effort of three agencies that have worked to support children in foster care and foster families. Cannon discussed the need for additional foster families in the community.

The Erie County Agricultural Society and No Limit FPV have reached an agreement with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) and MultiGP to hold the first North American Drone Masters on Aug. 10-11. Congressman Brian Higgins was joined Monday by representatives from People Inc., Western New York Independent Living and the National Coalition for Assistive & Rehab Technology to announce federal legislation to make it easier for individuals with significant disabilities and chronic medical conditions to access specialized wheelchairs and adaptive equipment technology. Reps. Higgins and Jim Sensenbrenner have introduced H.R. 2408, the Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act. The bipartisan bill creates a separate benefit category under Medicare to cover complex wheelchair and other adaptive equipment for people with severe medical needs.
