Boating safety course

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-1 will offer its "About Boating Safety" one-day class this spring and early summer in the River Region. Classes will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 29, March 28, April (TBA), May 16 and June 20, at the Officers Club, Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown. An additional class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewiston Fire Co. No. 2, 1705 Saunders Settlement Road.

This nationwide contest highlights the significance of art education in schools by showcasing the work of the country's most gifted young artists. You can pick up your nomination form(s) at the Grand Island Chamber office or go to www.gichamber.org and download one. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, March 6. They will be recognized at a dinner to be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Niagara Falls, on April 30.

Property damage, theft, and people being approached at private events by aggressive panhandlers were issues addressed by Ralph Lommer, former board member of the Grand Island Moose Lodge. He was one of a group of people who spoke at a public hearing at the Feb. 3 Grand Island Town Board meeting on a local law regulating aggressive panhandling on public property.

A countless number of Buffalo sports memorabilia meticulously fill every inch of the walls, ceiling and floor in the basement of John Boutet, sports archivist, author, athlete and a member of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors and the BFLO Experience, which is looking for a large downtown space to house the Buffalo sports, broadcasters and music halls of fame.

Drew Bernstein is a missionary at St. Luke's Mission of Mercy on Buffalo's East Side. He is also the coordinator of its Code Blue initiative when up to 50 cots and bedding are rolled out for homeless men to escape the winter cold at night when the temperatures are below freezing. It is a place where these men can obtain a hot meal and breakfast in the morning, dry their clothing and hopefully, a good night's sleep in a safe environment.

At a ribbon-cutting for Island Family Eye Care on Jan. 29, owner Dr. Adrienne Manzo Cassata said it's been a "dream of mine for a long time. I worked for an ophthalmology practice for about 10 years and decided to branch out on my own, and I'm just so excited to be on Grand Island. It's really been a warm reception so far. ... I'm just really happy to be here serving this community."

Kearns reminds snowmobilers to register their sleds locally in Erie County

As winter snow activities commence in Buffalo, Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns reminded snowmobilers to register their sleds "locally" by mailing in their snowmobile registrations using the signature green "Renew Local" envelope, or at any Erie County Auto Bureau. Doing so will help keep a portion of the registration fee in Erie County.

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, in conjunction with WNY PRISM, the Cornell University Cooperative Extension, and the NYS Hemlock Initiative is presenting a free public event focusing on the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive aphid-like forest pest that is currently spreading in Western New York forests. The spread of HWA threatens the Eastern Hemlock, an important tree species that is a critical part of forest ecosystems, provides stream habitat for trout species and creates habitat for numerous other plant and animal species.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority on Monday announced it has selected Home Inspections By The Fulmer Group to deliver home energy ratings for homebuyers in Erie County, as part of the second phase of the Home Energy Ratings Pilot. The pilot supports the state mandate for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's "Green New Deal," which puts New York on a path to economywide carbon neutrality.
