HS Football: Niagara-Wheatfield loses school's first night game

In his post-game speech coach Russ Nixon said, "This is a night you guys will never forget." The statement is fitting, as the Falcons made history playing the school's first game under Friday night lights at Terry Harvey Field. The Falcons lost the homecoming battle with Class AA power Williamsville North, 49-14.

NT opens new youth center

The North Tonawanda Youth Center had its grand opening on Saturday in front of numerous families and NT Mayor Arthur Pappas. The center, located at The Hope Center, 383 Vandervoort St., gave tours of the new facility and welcomed NT residents with popcorn, pizza and various activities.
Stevenson wins Green Party line

Twenty-four-year-old first-time candidate Random M. Stevenson has won the Green Party Line for Niagara County legislator District 7. The district covers parts of Wheatfield and North Tonawanda, and he is the first Green Party member to win this line.

The two have helped impact Niagara-Wheatfield football in a positive way this season, collaborating with the school district and booster club to put on N-W's first-ever Friday night football game.
HS Golf: Wheatfield golf wins NFL tournament

The Niagara-Wheatfield golf team has turned heads with their play for the last several years. On Tuesday, they added to the program's legacy of success. The Falcons golf team took home the Niagara Frontier League title at the league tournament at Willowbrook Golf Course. The top six golfers from each team in the league were on hand, with each team keeping the top five scores from their players at the end.

The Niagara-Wheatfield football team went into Clarence desperately needing a road win to boost their playoff chances. The Falcons couldn't put it together Friday night and they fell to Clarence, 42-29.

Cuomo announces winners of Western New York Smart Growth Community Fund

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced four Western New York communities have been selected to receive up to $10 million in funding from the Buffalo Billion II initiative. The City of Dunkirk, City of North Tonawanda, City of Lackawanna and Village of Gowanda are recipients of Smart Growth Community Funds for projects that utilize existing infrastructure to support placemaking, walkable communities and sustainable development.

The Niagara Power collegiate baseball team entertained kids, families and fans at Sal Maglie Stadium from 2007 to 2015. After two whole summers removed from the New York Collegiate Baseball League, the Power have come back home to Niagara Falls. On Monday afternoon, representatives from Niagara University and the Niagara Power came together to announce the return of the Power.

Wheatfield girls tennis unstoppable to start season

At the end of the 2016 tennis season, the Niagara-Wheatfield girls tennis team found themselves in second place, finishing 12-2 and one match behind Niagara Frontier League champion, Lockport. This season, the Falcons have used that finish as fuel to their fire. The Falcons have been nothing short of dominant in their first eight matches of the year, as they are 8-0 and 40-0 in sets.

Niagara-Wheatfield's defense has had a tough start to the season, giving up over 40 points per game. On Saturday, the script was flipped. The Falcons defeated the reigning Section VI Class A champion Bennett Tigers, 28-20, on a unusually hot September day at Terry Harvey Field.
American Legion commander to be honored in Sanborn

Rohan, the first woman elected to the post of national commander of The American Legion, will be honored by the Western New York 8th District of The American Legion at a banquet held at The American Legion Wheatfield Post 1451, 6525 Ward Road, Sanborn. Pappas joined Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres, North Tonawanda Director of Parks and Recreation Patty Brosius, as well as additional city and county officials for a groundbreaking ceremony in dedication of a new open-air bandshell in Raymond Klimek Veterans Park. The bandshell will replace the aging event stage purchased in 2003.

In certain years its promoted Buffalo, with the maze being designed in a Sabres logo or Bandits logo and more. In 2017, the maze has been designed to the theme "Hometown Heroes."

Six members of the 914th Civil Engineer Squadron departed Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station bound for Homestead Air Reserve Base, Florida, where they will support recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Irma. A 911th Airlift Wing C-130 out of Pittsburgh Air Reserve Station provided the transport.
