Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the "Vax and Scratch" program - which provides free New York State Lottery scratch-off tickets to individuals 18 and over with a grand prize of $5 million - will extend to 10 new state mass-vaccination sites.

On Saturday, May 29, the Aquarium of Niagara will transition to a summer schedule featuring extended operating hours. Sunday through Thursday, the venue will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Extended hours will run through Labor Day.

Members of Niagara Alliance Church, located at 7041 Witmer Road, have established a ministry to help serve the Wheatfield community. Their generosity was on display recently as the assisted the Town of Wheatfield Lions maintain their property by staining their front, Ward Road sign and landscaping bed.

Last week, the Niagara County Planning Board voted unanimously to reject a plan for an asphalt plant at 4660 Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara. It was the latest setback for AL Asphalt, the company behind the project.

There will be a private unveiling of a World War II service cloth bearing the names of 148 men and women from the Belden Center area of the Town of Niagara who served in the military during World War II. The private ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 30, at the Community Center located in Veteran's Memorial Community Park, 7000 Lockport Road.

On Monday, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County's (CCE) board of directors voted to move forward with planning and execution of the 2021 Niagara County Fair. A detailed safety plan has been submitted to Niagara County officials for approval.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the New York Power Authority's board of trustees approved three low-cost hydropower allocations that will create 102 jobs across Western New York and spur $145 million in private capital investments. The approved awards of 3,580 kilowatts of hydropower from the Power Authority's Niagara Power Project in Lewiston are to Americold Real Estate in Chautauqua County, SGS Recovery in Niagara County and Sumitomo Rubber USA in Erie County.

The Niagara Wine Trail members announced the return of a wine and cheese event. Wineries will feature a different cheese paired with a special wine from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, June 5, and noon until 5 p.m. Sunday, June 6. Tickets are $30 per person per day and include the cheese sample and three tastes of wine at each participating winery.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the fishing season for muskellunge, also known as "muskie" or "musky," starts in most state waters later this week. The season for New York's largest freshwater sportfish begins Saturday in inland waters and on Saturday, June 19, in Great Lakes waters, which include Lake Erie, upper Niagara River, lower Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

On May 15, the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas, the Gateway Cities Promotions committee and city officials from both Tonawanda and North Tonawanda took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the new Visitors Center of the Tonawandas located in Gateway Harbor Park.

On Monday, the Wheatfield Town Board honored members of the Niagara County Legislature for the services they have provided the county/town, particularly since the pandemic began. 2nd District Legislator Rebecca Wydysh, 10th District Legislator David Godfrey and 7th District Legislator Jesse Gooch were issued signed proclamations to commemorate their dedication to the area.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office and the Office for the Aging have partnered to offer free senior ID cards to any Niagara County resident 60 years of age and older. These cards will display a picture and identifying information similar to a driver's license on the front, and will list two emergency contacts and pertinent medical information on the back.

The entry fee is a $50 donation to the society (per vehicle). A driver and at least one crewmember is required, but participants can add more, as long as they finish with everyone who started.
