Lewiston-NOTL Rotary Club welcomes special guests

On Jan. 10, the Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club was entranced by two tales of achievement. First, Juanita Finn, winner of one of the Rotary scholarships, told members about her journey from an orphanage in Columbia to an adolescence in Lewiston and on to becoming a biology major at John Carroll University.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston presented donations to Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation (Washuta Memorial) and Lewiston Police Department during the club's December dinner meeting. Proceeds for these donations were raised though the club's annual clambake, which is held in early June at Kiwanis Park.

On Thursday, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, R-North Tonawanda, called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to delay the NY SAFE Act's pistol recertification deadline. As outlined in the NY SAFE Act, pistol permitholders who fail to recertify their license by the Jan. 31 deadline will have their license revoked.

The annual Youngstown/Town of Porter Community Holiday Baskets project has been declared a great success this year. Scores of volunteers worked a village-townwide collection campaign from Dec. 11-16 at the Red Brick Village Center gym. Through the efforts and the donations of many, 50 families received food boxes, and over 90 children received clothing and toy items.

Thanks to artists from Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, several walls at Mount St. Mary's Hospital are now adorned with artwork. Displays have been placed in four separate areas for the enjoyment of physicians, staff and visitors. Some of the artists recently visited the hospital to view the displays.
Village of Lewiston approves sign code change to aid businesses

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted Monday to approve a change to the municipal sign code. Intent on helping people spot local businesses from the street, the board voted unanimously to modify the projecting sign size from two square feet up to a maximum of six square feet.
