Structure fire in Porter

On May 30 at 7:38 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a residential structure fire on Main Street in the Town of Porter. A responding fire chief arrived on scene and confirmed a working structure fire, with flames through the windows and roof of the building.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 held its annual Memorial Day celebration and ceremony Monday at the "Circle of Honor" monument in Academy Park in Lewiston. Cmdr. Gordon Spencer served as master of ceremonies. Veteran and New York State Sen. Robert Ortt delivered the keynote address. Boy Scout Troop 824 conducted a flag-folding ceremony, and Santino Hall led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Niagara County Office for the Aging to host 2 events as part of Elder Abuse Awareness Month

With the month of June recognized nationally as Elder Abuse Awareness month, Niagara County is hosting two events for local senior citizens to help with abuse awareness and prevention, according to Darlene DiCarlo, director of the county's Office for the Aging.

Of course, that doesn't mean it is time for vacation, but rather DPW shifts its priorities and focus to other areas. I want to cover of few of those in this month's column.
Counting down to Lewiston's bicentennial: The story behind Fairbanks Mansion

The mansion on 105 Third St. belonged to one of the earliest settlers of Lewiston, who built the home sometime around 1815. This man is Joshua Fairbanks. He was born Jan. 14, 1768, in Dedham, Massachusetts, and moved to Lewiston in 1805 after creating a successful tavern in Queenston, Canada. It is known that Aaron Burr and his daughter and son-in-law stayed at his tavern on their way to see Niagara Falls around 1805.

The Wheatfield Business Association received 11 applicants - 11 outstanding students from schools including Niagara Wheatfield, Starpoint and St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute - for its 2022 scholarships. After consideration of all the entrants, Hunter Hodge and Evan Blatner were named the winners.

Village of Lewiston Board votes to add fence to playground, resurface basketball court

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston on Monday voted to fence-in the new inclusive playground and resurface the outdoor basketball courts at Marilyn Toohey Park. They approved these improvements contingent on receipt of funds from the sale of the "Big Yellow House" at 475 Ridge St.
Lewiston Town Board approves solar facility for Sanborn Farm Museum

Following a leadoff public hearing that drew favorable comments, the Lewiston Town Board moved to approve the site plan design/special use permit documents for a solar facility proposed by Borrego Solar Systems on the grounds of the Sanborn Farm Museum at 2660 Saunders Settlement Road.

NYPA hydropower allocation to support creation of 200 jobs at General Motors Plant in Lockport

The New York Power Authority board of trustees approved a low-cost hydropower award to General Motors Components Holdings, a subsidiary of General Motors, that will support nearly 1,450 jobs - 200 newly created - at its plant in Lockport. The Niagara hydropower will support a $137 million investment by the firm that will enable the production of critical components for electric motors at its Western New York location.
New location, technology, allows Niagara County to better meet needs of veterans

Now, with more welcoming space and some significant improvements in technology, the VSA is better equipped than ever before to helps veterans with any issues they may have, according to Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. 'The King's Birthday' special event at Old Fort Niagara

A British soldier, serving at Fort Niagara during the 18th century, got one holiday a year: the King's Birthday. To celebrate, the fort's garrison was turned out in new uniforms and powdered hair. At noon, the artillery fired a "Royal Salute," followed by three volleys of musketry.

At 832 Ridge Road sits a house with history that predates its construction. The first known structure built on this spot was made by Joseph Brant, a Mohawk chief, and his tribe. It was the site of their camp, and later the cabin of Brant.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Mount View Cemetery on Upper Mountain Road, across from the Pekin Fire Co., starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30. The Sanborn Fire Co. Band, plus the color guard and firing squad from the Niagara Falls Air Base, and the Cambria Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, will march from the Pekin firehall to the cemetery.
