Item already popular at Williamsville, Niagara Falls locations
Second Helping with Joshua Maloni
Customers at the DiCamillo Bakery in Lewiston notified the Tribune/Sentinel of their excitement concerning a new, yet such an obviously smart addition to the store inventory: a breakfast sandwich.
Hard egg, bacon and cheese are piled onto a world-famous DiCamillo Bakery roll. Each sandwich is made fresh daily and individually wrapped for ease of delivery – or eating on the spot.
Matthew DiCamillo explained, “At other locations, we've had them for a number of years. They're very popular at our Williamsville location, and very popular in our Linwood location. Our Niagara Falls Boulevard location, and Lewiston, don't get as many folks who come in looking for that type of product, but that keeps growing.”
DiCamillo’s has been serving lunch sandwiches at its Williamsville location for more than a decade. Breakfast sandwiches joined the rotation at several other stores between five and seven years ago, and recently began to be served at the Lewiston location.
“We have an operation that makes them for the stores that go through a lot of them," DiCamillo said. "It really originated just as an add-on to a lunch sandwich business that we’ve been doing, particularly in Williamsville.”
He added, “We just started building and doing a little bit more … and people would buy them. And so, we were like, ‘Well, let's just offer them everywhere. So, that's kind of its organic movement.”
DiCamillo explained, “We bake the eggs in the oven on a sheet pan. It's kind of a slotted sheet pan, so that it's perfectly sized. It's like an indented pan, so it's a full sheet pan with small, circular indentations that has the egg sitting down in the pan, so it's like a perfect size to keep an egg. We crack them every day and bake them in the ovens every day, as we bake the bacon every morning. It's fresh bacon. You’ve got American cheese, butter on the hard roll, and we keep it pretty simple.”
Patrons have noted the ease of the sandwich-buying, sandwich-eating process, DiCamillo said.
“We actually get a lot of customers who buy the breakfast sandwiches and really like that they're individually wrapped because then they just grab three or four and take them to work, and they're going to microwave them at their work office,” he said. “We get a lot of folks who do that. It's just easy to transport. And because we don't have a huge group of folks sitting and eating in a traditional breakfast or lunch nook-type thing, packaged products work really well for us – because a lot of our folks want that ease, and they're not going to stick around. They're going to come in, get a loaf of bread, maybe get a breakfast sandwich, and walk out the door.”
He added, “They last a really nice, long time, too. Another thing is that folks will tell us that they buy them and then they'll put it in the fridge, and they won’t have it until the next day; or they buy two or three and they’ll have one, and then the next day they have the next. They hold up really quite well that way.”
“Folks say that, ‘I put two of these in my fridge, and my kids had them the next morning, and they were really great. You guys should do this more often.’ ”
Moreover, “It pleases all. … You can add things to it. You want to take it out, you want to add some jalapenos or some sriracha, or whatever. You can add to it, and it's not going to mess anything up. It's not too defined. It's classic, simple, and folks could jazz it up if they want to.”
The breakfast sandwich is available daily – until the quantity runs out. For those who might not find one in Lewiston, extra sandwiches can often be found at the Linwood and Niagara Falls Boulevard bakery locations.
