On Thursday, Section VI Boys Golf Chairman Nate Leary announced that the section would hold its first annual Section VI boys golf team championship. The team aspect will be held alongside the annual individual championship and state qualifier. So, the tournament will not only crown an individual Section VI Champion and eight state tournament qualifiers, but also a Section VI team champion, something that hasn't been awarded in "many decades."
The format for the tournament requires the six teams to bring five golfers each. After a round of 18 holes, the highest score from each team will be dropped. The team with the lowest score wins the championship.
Niagara-Wheatfield's golf team, on a 68-match winning streak and off their fourth straight league title, will represent the Niagara Frontier League at the team championship. Coach Tim Codd announced that sectional qualifiers Nick Peters, Anthony Delisanti and Nolan Codd will not only fight for a spot in the state tournament and the individual crown, but also, the team championship. Joining the trio will be Nick Clouden and Adam Liberti.
Delisanti won the NFL tournament, carding a 3-under 69, while Peters and Codd qualified for sectionals with an 81 and 74, respectively. The trio also made first team All-NFL.
Clouden, a second team All-NFL award winner, just missed out on an alternate spot for sectionals. Liberti also received All-NFL third team. Clouden and Liberti's stroke averages during the season were 42.6 and 42.7, respectively.
Joining Niagara-Wheatfield in the team battle will be ECIC champ Orchard Park and Niagara-Orleans champ Medina. The CCAA I and CCAA II East and West will also compete, but their season champion is crowned in the spring season.
The tournament is slated to take place at River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island. Golf will start at 9 a.m., Monday, May 21.
