The Bruce Sutherland Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, May 16, at the Niagara Frontier Golf Club in Youngstown. Funds raised will go to the Historical Association and the Lewiston Museum, and the VFW Post 7487 scholarship fund - two local causes that Sutherland had volunteered and worked for in the past. Bruce was a respected community leader who unexpectedly passed away in December.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the 2021 hunting seasons in New York were the safest ever, with the lowest number of hunting-related shooting incidents since record-keeping began. DEC environmental conservation police officers investigated nine hunting-related shooting incidents (HRSIs) in 2021, including one fatality.

Tickets are on sale for the 2021 Ransomville Speedway awards banquet, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4. The event will take place at the Lewiston No. 2 Fire Co. hall, located at 1705 Saunders Settlement Road. Dinner will take place at 5:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. Donna Eick will cater the banquet and provide an open bar.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced New York's fifth "Free Fishing Day" of the year is on Saturday, Sept. 25. It coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is celebrated annually to promote outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and target shooting. New York provides anglers with six "Free Fishing Days" each year.

For Williamson, it was his third victory of the season at "The Big R." For Wagner, it was his second triumph of the season.

The Division of Consumer Protection and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) are alerting New Yorkers of all ages of the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike. A new CDC report revealed bicycle-related deaths nationally increased between 2009 and 2018, primarily among adults. Males were three times more likely than females to end up in the hospital with traumatic brain injuries.

With the rainout this past Friday night, Ransomville Speedway will try again and open the gates for the first time in 2021 on Friday, May 14, with the running of the Mackenzie Kulesza Memorial for the Sunflowers of Sanborn Mini Stocks. The 36-lap event is in honor of Mackenzie Kulesza, the 11-year-old who died tragically following a car accident in November 2020.
