As a teacher and a coach at Niagara-Wheatfield, coach Steve Miller has a lot that he has to take care of. Miller also has a family, which he cares for dearly. This summer, though, he was dealt a tough blow.
Miller's wife, Krista, was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer for the second time and he's been at the forefront taking care of his family. Along with that, he continues to help coach the Niagara-Wheatfield boys basketball team, which his son Cam Miller also plays for. The team has been nothing but supportive for the family, knowing what their coach and teammate is going through.
"Since Krista's breast cancer diagnosis last summer, our "Falcon Family" has been there every step of the way to support her, from surgery through the 18 weeks of chemotherapy she just finished last week," Miller said.
To show their support, the group teamed up with Lewiston-Porter's basketball team to create a "Pink-out" game in support of Krista and the Miller family. The two teams will don pink T-shirts in warm ups and encourage everyone to wear pink to the game.
Steve was blown away by the support and recognized it will probably be a night he remembers for a very long time.
"The 'Pink-out' game is going to be a special, yet emotional night. We are completely overwhelmed by everything that Erik (O'Bryan, N-W head coach), the rest of our staff and all of our varsity and junior varsity players have done for our family throughout her battle. Matt Bradsahaw (LP head coach) and Joe Casale (LP assistant) are good friends of mine and Krista is a Lew-Port alum; Class of 1989, so for them and their players to be a part of this makes it really special," he said.
The "Pink-out" game will be played tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Niagara-Wheatfield High School. Attendees are encouraged to flood the stands and wear pink to show support for the Miller family.
